EPRI’s Transmission and Distribution Laboratory in Lenox, MA is an industry-leading facility that routinely creates and executes cutting-edge technical research.  The site is rich with history and is continually evolving to meet the needs of modern utilities.  Researchers work with the lab team to design, build, and execute research projects in the areas of high-voltage transmission, equipment aging, UAV testing, underground manhole events, structural resiliency, among others.

The Lab Manager leads the team to operate safely and effectively to support the research strategy for the T&D research areas.  This includes collaboration with the research teams to coordinate schedules, develop capabilities, and execute test plans.  The lab manager should be an excellent communicator with the ability to engage multiple internal stakeholders on the topics of research plans, operations, and environmental health & safety.

The lab manager should be willing to take on new challenges, operate in a dynamic environment, and exercise good judgement and creativity, all while positioning the lab to meet the future needs of the organization.

Description:

Implements laboratory operation standards and company policies to provide effective research planning and execution on multi-scaled EPRI sponsored R&D projects conducted in the site laboratory.  Responsible for developing and implementing schedules, procedures, and contracting needs.  Works closely with  R&D leadership, Corporate EH&S manager, and key laboratory personnel to ensure safe and efficient operation of the site lab through the development and execution of sound business processes and procedures.  Coordinates lab resources with project and program managers to ensure effective utilization of these resources.  Promotes and educates internal and external clients alike on lab capabilities.  Looked to as a local subject matter expert and key resource for lab planning, scheduling and internal R&D execution.

  • 25%      Manage/mentor technical employees.  Directs and supervises the activities of laboratory engineers, laboratory technicians, and support staff; assigns and manages work loads and schedules; provides counsel and advice to junior staff; reviews the planning and work of others; recommends and executes appropriate employment actions.

  • 35%      Coordinate with project and program managers for efficient use of lab resources.  Work with project and program managers as primary liaison to existing lab and/or machine shop resources.  Effectively schedule resources, both in terms of technical staff and capabilities, to assist in the timely and accurate completion of current EPRI R&D projects.  Stays current on lab equipment and capabilities and is able to assist project and program managers in creating technical solutions utilizing existing resources.  Monitors, plans and oversees lab equipment maintenance needs.

  • 20%      Develop and enforce policies and procedures to ensure safe and efficient operation of lab facilities. Works with subject matter experts at all organizational levels (i.e. senior management, lab personnel, EH&S Manager, etc.) to research and implement lab management operations best practices.  Participates in periodic laboratory audits to ensure the safe and effective utilization of personnel and equipment.  Stays current and ensures all laboratory and/or machine shop facilities within area of responsibility comply with relevant federal and state regulations governing the safe operation of EPRI’s laboratories. Schedules weekly laboratory safety and scheduling meeting.  Works in collaboration with the corporate EH&S Manager to implement all programs and resolve any issues pertaining to the safe operation of the laboratories. The EH&S Manager will have the final call on immediate safety related concerns.  

  • 10%      Promote lab  capabilities to internal and external clients. Conducts post project execution evaluations to monitor and ensure customer performance standards and expectations are met or exceeded by EPRI lab and/or machine shop personnel.   Works with project managers, program managers, and EPRI customers to educate them on the resources and capabilities available at their laboratory facilities.   

  • 10%    Manage Laboratory Indirect and Capital Budgets.  Manage and track all Laboratory capital assets.

 Performs all other duties and assignments as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Incumbent must demonstrate a commitment to safety and ability to lead a culture of safety

  • Experience working with high-voltage systems

  • Incumbent should have experience planning and executing multiple phases of laboratory research and development projects of various sizes and complexities. 

  • Must possess superior organizational skills.  Able to coordinate multiple tasks with variable deadlines.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills required.  Must be able to work effectively with internal and external clients and vendors.  Able to remain collected and calm under stress. 

  • Able to effectively delegate assignments and manage these with conviction.  Comfortable coaching and mentoring less experienced laboratory personnel.

  • Must be a team player and demonstrate the ability to provide consistent and exemplary customer service.

  • Demonstrates strong analytical skills to structure work, manage budgets and ensure the laboratory is producing high quality, accurate data.

  • Demonstrates the ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive personal and corporate information. 

  • Must demonstrate the ability to qualify for security clearance as needed.

Additional Job Information:

Educational Requirements:

  • Require High School Diploma

  • Prefer BS or Masters Degree in a related Engineering Field

  • Require 3 to 5 years but prefer 5 to 8 years have experience planning and coordinating multiple phases of laboratory R&D work of various complexities and preferably in multiple environments.  Incumbent should be very knowledgeable on the equipment and capabilities of their lab.  Incumbents will be expected to be available for travel.
