TEMPORARY SHELTER COOK (7/01/2020 – 11/30/2020) – DV Emergency Shelter
Hours: Monday – Friday,30 hours per week:
Reports to: Shelter Manager
Job Summary: The Shelter Cook is responsible for planning and preparing economical, healthy meals for all shelter residents; for the upkeep and maintenance of the shelter kitchen, appliances, and pantry at DVS’s confidential shelter.
Applications due: Open until filled.
Responsibilities:
Prepares lunch and dinner five days a week for all adult and child shelter residents.
Prepares menus that takes into consideration the varying health and cultural needs of shelter residents.
Prepares menus and clear written instructions for preparation and serving of meals on days when not on duty.
Works closely with Facility Coordinator to keep shelter food stocked: preparing grocery lists, regularly rotating foods from storage to pantry, and ensuring that food items in freezers and refrigerators are covered and labeled appropriately.
Assists Facility Coordinator in maintaining a clean and orderly shelter kitchen and pantry area, including regular and thorough cleaning of appliances, etc.
Conduct all work in a manner consistent with the policies and procedures of the shelter and of the agency.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Demonstrate general knowledge of the dynamics of domestic violence
Maintain appropriate boundaries when working with shelter residents and staff
Maintain confidentiality, neutrality, and professionalism in role;
Multi task and work in a fast paced environment;
Work effectively with persons who have diverse styles, abilities, and backgrounds;
Demonstrate basic computer skills
Adapt to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
Arrive to work promptly and regularly.
Concentrate and perform work duties accurately.
Operate commercial kitchen equipment such as ovens, stove tops, commercial dish washers, steam tables, etc.
Follow proper procedures for the healthy and sanitary preparation and serving of meals.
Understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.
Perform repetitive manual tasks that require agility and manual dexterity; and Sort, stack, and arrange items in an organized manner
Ability to work as a member of a team as well as independently
Agreement with DVS philosophy statement
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
18 years of age or older; and
Possess or have the ability to obtain a Washington State Food Handlers card within 30 days of employment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Previous experience cooking in either a residential or commercial setting
