The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) is seeking a Director for the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships. Reporting to the Vice Provost for Enrollment Management and Planning, the Director of Financial Aid and Scholarships is a collaborative expert and key member of the enrollment management team. Working in collaboration with key leaders in Enrollment Management, Academic Affairs, Institutional Advancement, Institutional Research, Finance and Student Business Services, the Director provides leadership and support in developing, employing and analyzing strategy to maximize use of need-based aid and merit aid in supporting institutional enrollment goals. The Director of Financial Aid and Scholarships provides management oversight to all matters related to financial aid including administering all federal, state, and institutional student financial aid policies and procedures, managing $126 million dollars of financial aid and scholarship funds, preparing all federal, state, and institutional reports pertaining to aid/scholarships, and serving as liaison to state and federal funding agencies. The Director oversees the development and delivery of institutional financial literacy efforts.

Additionally, the Director of Financial Aid and Scholarships leads a staff of 18 professionals and collaborates with many internal stakeholders to develop and implement a welcoming, student-centered process balancing technology with efficient and professional service. The Director assists in counseling students and parents regarding financial aid.

In addition, we are seeking candidates who exhibit a strong commitment for innovation as demonstrated by their ability to be proactive, change agents, dynamic, universal (far-reaching), forward thinking, strategic and collaborative.

The successful candidate will possess at least a bachelor’s degree, with a minimum of seven years supervisory level experience in financial aid and will demonstrate a progression of increased professional responsibility and leadership. Additionally, a strong background in student financial aid administration (need-based and merit) and a solid understanding of federal and state financial aid regulations, policies and procedures is required. The successful candidate will have the ability to evaluate and assess systems, facilitate change processes, possess a vision for strengthening processes, and make effective use of technology to improve systems and delivery of services.

Preferred qualifications include a master’s degree, extensive background in managing technology-based operations and projects in a college/university setting, experience in a PeopleSoft environment and knowledge and understanding of best practices in student financial aid congruent with a strategic enrollment management model.
