Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to ensure smooth daily store operations, prompt and friendly customer service, and a safe, well-maintained workplace. The Store Manager is responsible for maintaining all store equipment to ensure safety and continuity of business, as well as maintaining all Standard Operating Procedures to ensure relevant safety protocols for day-to-day operations. The Store Manager is responsible for hiring, overseeing training, and scheduling of all Front-End and Grocery crew. The Store Manager works with the General Manger to ensure store-wide objectives for profitability, labor efficiency, and margin are successfully met. Additional responsibilities include leading an Operations Team of fellow managers, as well as contributing to the organization and development of a Collective Management Team. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily, with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Supervision, Leadership and Customer Service

  • Effectively and efficiently manage all aspects of store operations based on goals, objectives and standards established by the General Manager
  • Model excellent customer service and ensure that staff is adequately trained to provide a uniquely excellent shopping experience for our customers
  • Ensure staff is knowledgeable on and actively promoting the benefits of ownership to our customers
  • Assist the Management Team in growing the IVFC Owner Program through events and promotions
  • Work closely with the Point of Sales Manager to co-ordinate quarterly Owner Drives
  • Work with Department Managers and provide consultation, coaching and problem-solving support in all areas of their jobs
  • Ensure that department managers have the training and resources necessary to fulfill their job responsibilities
  • Ensure that communications to staff are clear, direct, and respectful
  • Model supportive and participatory leadership qualities, promoting staff development, team building and motivating staff to achieve departmental goals
  • Treat staff and managers with consistency and fairness, in a style appropriate to a cooperative work environment
  • Participate in establishing goals and objectives for the organization
  • Participate as a member of the Management Team, including leading the Operations Team and helping staff transition to a Collective Management structure

 

Operations

  • Oversee store wide weekly schedule (specifically grocery and front-end schedules) and ensure strategic and optimal scheduling in conjunction with Fresh Departments and wider store objectives.
  • Regularly meet with department managers to provide goals and plans for improvements in customer service, department appearance, and other operational matters
  • Handle or delegate any equipment/physical plant problems
  • Make recommendations to the Management Team regarding changes in operational policies and procedures to enhance customer service, employee well-being, safety and profitability.
  • Coordinate and participate in store Manager on Duty (MOD) system and ensure a strong management & MOD presence in the store at all times. Regularly work opening, closing and weekend shifts.
  • Ensure compliance of all store policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws: business licenses, permits, health regulations, security, etc.
  • Ensure smooth flow of store operations on a day-to-day basis. Arrange for coverage of vacant shifts as necessary
  • Ensure the retail store is full, clean, attractively merchandised and efficiently operated
  • Adjust hours and assign tasks as necessary to meet the demand of customer flow, making recommendations to the General Manager regarding budgetary matters
  • Develop efficient and effective store opening and closing procedures
  • Ensure proper store cleanliness and appearance during open hours. Ensure all departments have cleaning schedules and that they are followed
  • Conduct store audits for feedback to department managers
  • Coordinate and ensure smooth and accurate store and department quarterly inventories
  • Ensure effective store wide communication channels and that all departments hold regular meetings
  • Coordinate and lead monthly department manager meetings
  • Coordinate and present at store wide meetings in collaboration management team.
  • Coordinate remodels, resets, major repairs and maintenance projects with appropriate people
  • Ensure safety and security on a daily basis
  • Ensures proper procedures for handling emergencies, shoplifting, theft, robbery, and inappropriate behavior
  • Maintain a posted emergency plan for store equipment malfunctions to minimize product loss. Ensure that staff is trained in following the posted procedures
  • Spend at a minimum 50% of their time on sales floor (working Front-End or Grocery shifts)

 

Management and Personnel

  • Participate in the effort to transition to a Collective Management team in co-operation with the IVFC Board of Directors. Work with GM and management team to create management systems that ensure compliance with Board Policies.
  • Attend regularly scheduled Board meetings each month and deliver report on operational matters
  • Support GM and Management Team decisions and ensure they are clearly communicated to staff
  • Treat all staff with consistency and fairness in order to foster a cooperative work environment
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality and professionalism at all times
  • Work with HR Manager to ensure all store-wide policies are updated and clearly communicated
  • Work with managers to ensure employee training and store protocols are effective and up-to-date
  • Ensure all employees complete necessary store-wide training, as well as department specific training
  • Work with HR Manager and Department Managers to ensure all appropriate disciplinary action is taken and properly documented
  • Conduct quarterly review of Front-end and Grocery staff with the support of the Grocery Manager
  • Follow up with managers to ensure that necessary action is being taken in regard to employee communication, scheduling issues and staff development
  • Work with the Finance Team to Coordinate departmental labor budgets for the annual business plan
  • Work with Department Managers to ensure departments meet sales, margin and labor goals
  • Monitor and ensure labor ranges comply with approved budget

Technical & Mechanical Skills

· Use a telephone, printer, computer, copier, and management-specific software

· Operate equipment such as hand trucks, U boats, pallet jack

 

Mathematical Skills

· Add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals

· Perform these operations using units of American money, weight measurement and volume

 

Education and Experience

· High school diploma or equivalent

· At least 3 years in Personnel Management: hiring, training, evaluating, coaching and developing

· At least 3 years in Operations: overseeing physical plant/equipment maintenance and safety

· Experience serving the public, providing excellent customer service, and an ability to project a friendly, outgoing personality

· Preferred: Experience developing and implementing budgets; meeting sales, labor and margin goals

 

Work Environment

· Noise level is moderate.

· Will be required to use step stools, step ladders, box cutters and pricing tools.

Company Description

The Isla Vista Food Co-op is a small, community-owned Grocery Store in the heart of Isla Vista (UCSB)

We are currently seeking an experienced professional to fill the role of Store Manager at the IV Food Co-op! Primary responsibilities include oversight of store operations (including maintenance of equipment and store cleanliness), scheduling, training, safety, personnel management and strategic planning. This positions is a full-time retail position that requires the ability and willingness to work 3 to 4 floor shifts per week as well as execute the administrative part of this position at a high level. The Store Manager will share on-call duties throughout the week with another senior manager and must be available to work some nights and weekends. This role is integral to the growth and success of our workplace as our management team endeavors to build a horizontal leadership structure. While we are currently operating with a traditional hierarchical model, our 8-person management team is working with the IVFC Board of Directors to form a management collective that will be overseen directly by our Board. We are looking for someone who has experience in collaborative team leadership and/or project management, and is willing to put in the work that's necessary to help facilitate this transition.

Requirements for this position include: 3 years in personnel management and team building, 3 years in retail/customer service positions, 3 years in physical plant maintenance/operations of a retail space, restaurant, or venue. Financial management experience is preferred but not required.
