POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the VP, Innovations, the IP Associate/Patent Agent will be involved in the development and implementation of strategies to secure and protect Pfenex's intellectual property. The successful candidate has a solid foundation in molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology or related field and works closely with external patent counsel to manage intellectual property filings. The ability to apply innovative problem-solving skills and practical business judgment to maximize intellectual property value and minimize risk is essential.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop strategies for and conduct prior art database searches for patentability and freedom to operate analyses
- Analyze patent and scientific papers and documents to assist with patent prosecution and litigation
- Work with scientists to capture innovations; review and analyze invention disclosures
- Work closely with scientists to draft and prosecute high quality patent applications
- Assist with patent enforcement and/or challenge proceedings
- Assist with the development and management of Pfenex's global patent portfolio
QUALIFICATIONS
- Broad scientific knowledge in biotechnology required
- MS/PhD in biology, molecular biology, cell biology, immunology or biochemistry
- 2-5 years of biotech/pharma industry experience
- Must be eligible to sit for the USPTO Registration Exam
- UPTO registration preferred
- 2 years of patent prosecution experience
- Experience in U.S. and foreign intellectual property law relating to biotechnology, in the pharmaceutical or healthcare industries, with a law firm or corporation
- Experience with patent docketing
- Strong analytical and research skills required including experience with patent and non-patent literature databases, as well as nucleic acid/protein sequence search databases
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; must communicate legal issues and solutions clearly and concisely
- Demonstrated organizational and time management skills
