The City of Carpinteria, CA is looking to hire a full-time Parks & Facilities Maintenance supervisorto to ensure safe and efficient operations for the City's parks and facilities for the Parks, Recreation & Public Facilities Department. Under the direction of the Parks and Recreation Director, supervise, prioritize, assign and review the work of Parks and Facilities Maintenance crew responsible for providing park maintenance, repair of park facilities, beach maintenance operations and perform a variety of mechanical and technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility and to coordinate and supervise contractors providing services to the City to insure contract compliance and quality control.

Duties may include, but not limited to the following:

  • Plan, prioritize, assign supervise and review the work of staff and contractors responsible for providing park maintenance and repair of City parks and recreation facilities.
  • Establish schedules and methods for providing maintenance services; identify resource needs; review needs with the Parks and Recreation Director and allocate resources accordingly.
  • Receive emergency maintenance calls via cellular telephone and provide appropriate responses; evaluate problems and establish installation, maintenance repair priorities; review and prioritize all work orders prior to issuance to staff.
  • Receive and investigate maintenance complaints; conduct field inspections of work completed and identify problems with that require attention; conduct facilities inspections on all City facilities; ensure staff compliance with proper work methods consistent with the City's policies and OSHA regulations.
  • Participate in the selection of facilities maintenance staff; provide and coordinate staff training and skill enhancement training; work with employees to correct deficiencies and/or inferior work quality; implement discipline procedures,
  • Ability to conduct some repairs and maintenance activities as needed.
  • Participate in the preparation and administration of Parks Maintenance budget; submit budget recommendations; monitor expenditures and charges to all maintenance accounts.
  • Prepare analytical and statistical reports on operations and activities and end of the month financial reports.
  • Supervise the maintenance and repairs of Parks facilities.
  • Conduct through routine inspections of parks facilities to assess safety, accessibility and maintenance needs.
  • Keep written and photographic computer records of all inspection and maintenance activities.
  • Administer and supervise parks maintenance contractors.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education/Certification :

  • Possession of a valid Class "C" CA driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to obtain a Certified Playground Safety Inspectors certificate.
  • Ability to obtain a Pool Operators Certificate.

Required Knowledge:

  • Computer software such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Experience Preferred:

  • Minimum of two to four years of supervisory experience preferably in the Parks and Recreation department and municipal government industry.
  • Minimum of two to four years' experience in general facilities maintenance.
  • Associate degree or equivalent.

Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Standard English usage and grammar.
  • Ability to speak Spanish is preferred, but not required.
  • Safe driving principles and practices.
  • Landscaping, horticultural practices, public park maintenance.
  • Basic repairs, building maintenance, equipment maintenance.
  • Basic methods and techniques of herbicide and pesticide applications.

Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively, tactfully and persuasively in both oral and written forms.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; calmly handle complaints and problems.
  • Obtain a Certified Pool Operators certificate
  • Obtain Playground Inspectors certificate
