Job Summary: The transport nurse provides patient care in a mobile environment to high risk patients and their families being transported to/from the McLane Childrens Hospital at Scott and White. The transport nurse acts as a resource hospital wide for patient care standards. As a recognized resource, the transport nurse assists in establishing and maintaining a high quality standard of care for the neonatal and pediatric transport population. The transport nurse is responsible for organizing, implementing, and coordinating patient care as directed by the Neonatal/Pediatric Physician for the purpose of stabilization of the infant and pediatric transfer to a tertiary or Special Care Center. The transport nurse is also responsible for participating in the care of NICU, ED and PICU patients and in the direction and guidance of other nursing staff members. Reporting RelationshipsThe transport nurse reports to the Director of Trauma and Transport at the McLane Childrens Hospital.Essential FunctionsInternal Support: *Critical care expertise is provided by the transport nurse within the McLane Childrens Hospital. The transport nurse assists the team with patient assessment, stabilization, interventions and assists in physician communication.*Responds to trauma team activations and doctor blues when available.*Participates as a member of the Rapid Response Team when available.Departmental*Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of departmental operations, policies, procedures, products, programs relating to the transport environment and patient population.*Acts as a team member by identifying personal, departmental and hospital goals. Collaborates in a positive manner towards the success of the goals by offering input, ideas and solutions.*Maintains department responsibilities by attending educational offerings, staff meetings, departmental and hospital interdisciplinary meetings, case reviews, and recurrency training.Education*Assists in the development and validation of patient care standards for the transport patient population. *Develops educational material for staff, referring staff, parents, patients, and pre-hospital personnel. *Assists in the identification of patient care provider educational needs (staff, pre-hospital personnel, referring facilities staff).*Obtains and maintains required certifications and licensure.*Other duties may be assigned Knowledge, Skills and Abilities*Acquires and maintains required certifications as outlined in the Transport Nurse Job Requirements departmental guideline. *Demonstrates analytical skills necessary to resolve complex patient problems in a mobile environment, develop standards of care and procedures, and evaluate the quality of nursing care. *Demonstrates ability to work independently and utilize time management, prioritization and multi-tasking skills.*Demonstrates ability to assemble complex equipment and perform tasks which require fine motor skills.*Demonstrates ability to cope with physically and mentally stressful situations.*Basic personal computer skills preferred.*Maintains and demonstrates the ability to rotate shifts and/or work flexible hours to meet patient care needs.*Must be able to walk, stand for long periods, over 80% of the assigned work period.*Must be able to squat occasionally and sit frequently.*In the Fixed Wing/Rotor Wing/Ambulance, must be able to lift/carry 50 pounds, push/pull up to 40 pounds occasionally, reach overhead moderately, climb moderately, squat/bend/kneel occasionally, sit/stand moderately, walk/move about frequently, tolerate tight quarters, small spaces and sit in a confined space.*2 years NICU or PICU experience required
