Role Purpose:
Under the general direction of the Sterile Processing Manager, the Sterile Processing Technician delivers, receives, and disassembles equipment, instruments, and supplies. In addition, the Technician also sterilizes/cleans and assembles equipment, instruments, and supplies.
Responsibilities:
- Use department standard practices and methods to clean, assemble and sterilize equipment, instrument and supplies. Properly disassemble, clean and/or decontaminate instrumentation and equipment according to manufacturer recommendations, AAMI standards and department standard practices; responsible for proper use and discard of chemicals used.
- Assemble procedure trays, instrument sets, specialty instrument set ups, crash carts, transport cradles and equipment.
- Responsible for verifying and completing all sterilization controls and Biological and Control Indicators.
- Works closely with the Surgical Suites department by providing instrument sets and supplies, managing ad hoc instrument and supply needs, answering calls/requests, assembling/delivering case carts as needed, and maintains inventory instrumentation and supplies using computer programs such as Epic and Censitrac; communicate inventory needs with the department coordinator or the department buyer.
- Operates steam and sterrad sterilizers.
- Access data from Epic to print surgical schedule and pick lists; replenish supplies as they become available. Develops and utilizes knowledge of appropriate substitute instruments.
- Follows department procedures for reporting equipment in need of repair; notifies the proper department and/or specific service representative when equipment malfunctions (i.e. Clinical Engineering, IT, Maintenance, EVS or Plant Services) and completes follow up with department staff & department(s) affected when equipment malfunctions.
- Prioritize needs and tasks based on work load of each day based on the needs of department customers; complete the priorities of each area prior to shift end or communicate tasks to oncoming shifts.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Previous sterile processing experience is desirable. Charge duties require IAHCSMM or CBSPD certification within 12 months of hire and maintained annually.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of a Surgical Technician program is desirable.
- Central Service Technician certification by a nationally recognized program is desirable.
