Role Purpose:
 
Under the general direction of the Unit Director/Registered Nurse, functions as a member of the health care team to maintain the clerical functions of the nursing unit. Performs Monitor Watcher role which includes running a rhythm strip for each patient on admission and within an hour of the beginning of the shift, measures the interval for each patient and records the data on the strip itself and on the master monitor sheet, mounts significant rhythm variations and changes in interval on the "Monitor Strip" form and places these in the patient's monitor chart, notifies the patient's nurse of changes in rhythm or other parameters, maintains alarm settings and volume. Discharges patient from the monitor. Files all "Monitor Strip" forms in the patient's permanent chart.
 
Role Responsibilities:  
  • Fosters, participates and is knowledgeable in Shared Governance as defined at St. Mary’s Hospital using the conceptual framework for nursing practice as a guide. Assumes responsibility and accountability for own professional practice, continuing education and competency (i.e., mandatory inservice, staff meetings). Seeks learning opportunities.    
  • Shares expertise and knowledge with coworkers and peers. Assists in orientation of new nursing personnel and unit secretaries. Supports the activities, decisions and initiative of colleagues.    
  • Follows hospital/unit directives; e.g. standards, policies, procedures, protocols. Assumes responsibility for equipment operation and maintenance.    
  • Respects the confidentiality and dignity of patients. Communicates effectively with customers.    
  • Punctual for reports/breaks. Uses supplies effectively. Completes work within required shift, i.e., end of shift; OT minimal or nonexistent.    
  • Demonstrates skill and professionalism in the use of the phone.    
  • Maintains, organizes and updates communication to assure optimal delivery of patient care.    
  • Accurately enters/retrieves patient information using computer.

  • Performs other duties as requested.  
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Certified Nursing Assistant and/or EMT in the State of WI
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • General familiarity with hospital routines, medical terminology and computer data entry. Strong communication skills are vital. Upon hire and through orientation monitor technicians are required to complete EKG training and pass testing at a 90% pass rate. 
Physical Requirements:
 
Employees in this position are, or can be, required to possess the following physical capabilities:
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling up to 25 lbs.
  • Stooping, kneeling and/or crouching daily.
  • Standing or walking more than 4 hours a day.
  • Running to respond to patient emergencies.
  • Reaching, grasping, fingering, and/or feeling more than 6 hours a day.
  • Visual acuity in order to correctly distinguish skin tone variations, evidence of IV infiltration, infection; able to read telemetry, blood pressure gauges, etc.
  • Audio acuity in order to correctly distinguish various body sounds (i.e., respirations, heart tones, bowel sounds).
  • Audio acuity to discern sounds made by various types of machinery or equipment that would indicate dangerous or improper operation.
