Description: KinderCare Education (KCE) Swim Instructors will be responsible for maintaining safety and providing adequate supervision in the pool area. Swim Instructors often obtain additional hours by working in the classroom during bad weather and hours when the pool is closed.

Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions. These are the basic expectations for Swim Instructors. Of course, creative and new ways to meet or exceed expectations are encouraged, so long as the required essential functions are also met.
 
Keep Children Safe
 · Supervise children closely by keeping all children in sight and using Child Supervision Records properly.
 · Screen all children that are permitted by parents to participate in group swim lessons and recreational swimming pool time.
 · Act immediately and appropriately to secure safety of children in the event of emergency.
· Use only positive child guidance techniques to instruct children.
· Familiarize yourself with and work within licensing regulations related to childcare in your location.
 
Create an Unrivaled Education Experience
 · Provides leadership and direction in the development of the swim program and enrollment.
· Instructs and evaluates children participating in swim lessons.
·Submits completed skill sheets and attendance sheets on time.
· Instruct individual children and small groups of children in aquatic skills, included but, not limited to floating, facilitating upper/lower limb responses and head control, preschool learn-to-swim; lifesaving and water safety.

 ·  Breath control and underwater swimming  
 ·  Buoyancy
 ·  Changing direction and position
 ·  Treading 
 ·  Swimming on the front, back and side
  · General and personal water safety
       ·  Test all children for swimming ability
       ·  Responsible for the safety of the children in the class
· Help implement KU’s curriculum in a way that is consistent to meet each child’s unique needs.

 · Come to work on time and ready to give 100% every day.
 · Work encouragingly with your team to achieve the center’s goals.
 · Be aware of accreditation standards and actively demonstrate the “Observable Criteria” needed to gain or maintain accreditation.
· Attend Professional Development Days, center staff meetings, and any other meetings outside of your regular schedule that are required by your Center Director.
 
 Embrace Ongoing Learning
 · Learn KU’s Service Values and seek ways to integrate them into your daily work habits.
. Incorporate early childhood education best practices learned through training and experience, and by working closely with Teachers and Lead Teachers.
 · Learn to use the technology and systems needed for your job, and be willing to learn new programs, applications, systems, or devices as things change.
 
Be Responsive to Changing Needs
· Work hours may vary to meet the needs of the children in our care and the center. You may need to work more or fewer hours than originally scheduled.
 · After learning the job, you should be able to keep up on all your responsibilities without direct guidance. Anticipate needs and follow through without prompting.
· You may need to “float” between classrooms to cover lunches, breaks, or ratio changes.
 · Take on other center duties as needed to care for children, support your co-workers, and contribute to the center’s success

 

Qualification:

Required Skills and Experience\:

 

·         Current Red Cross certification

·         Must be at least 18 years old

·         Life Guards may occasionally function as an Assistant Teacher during pool closures. Assistant Teachers generally play a support role in the classroom, but may be alone in the classroom for short periods if state guidelines allow

·         Must meet state’s education criteria

·         Must be physically able to use a computer with basic proficiency, lift a minimum of 40 pounds, and work indoors or outdoors.  Must be able to assume postures in low levels to allow physical and visual contact with children, see and hear well enough to keep children safe, and engage in physical activity with children.

·         Ability to speak, read, and write English.
