Under supervision of the Director of Pharmacy, this position is responsible for providing support to the Pharmacy, Nursing and Reimbursement departments. The Pharmacy Care Technician will interact with patients, hospital discharge planners, insurance companies, doctor's offices, labs and homecare agencies to ensure appropriate communication and follow - up to initiate or continue the patient care process. The Pharmacy Care Technician will be responsible for preparing and managing the documentation required to complete all interactions

Positions in this function consult with customers, members, patients, providers, internal departments and / or external third - parties on any or all of the following: consulting with and coordinating initial set up and on - going treatment plan for specialty drug patients, including DURs, co - pay assistance, ancillary products, scheduling Pharmacist consults and / or RN visits, and liaison with provider offices on labs, refill orders and prior authorizations.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Review and advise on medications and treatment plans (based on review of medical case notes, medication list and lab results) to improve outcomes and avoid potential drug interactions.
  • Discuss with patients life issues affecting medication adherence and provide advice on improving drug regimen compliance.
  • Advise patients on alternate Rx fill strategies of retail versus mail order and options for financial assistance.
  • May outreach to providers on suspected medication abuse situations.
  • Review medication regimen for disease state for LTC facilities /  hospice care / RN case managers / Medical Directors / clients and provide summaries and guidance on future medication plans. Advice may include alternate drug therapies, stopping a medication and / or lower cost alternative.
  • Review medical case notes to determine on-going medication treatment plan and project future medication costs.
  • Extensive work experience within own function.
  • Work is frequently completed without established procedures.

  • May act as a resource for others. 
  • May coordinate others' activities.

Required Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma / GED (or higher)
  • Pharmacy Technician License in the State of Maryland
  • Proficiency with computer and Windows PC applications including ability to navigate and learn new and complex computer system application
  • Pharmacy / prescription data entry experience
  • Ability to work an 8 - hour shift Monday through Friday 8:00 am - 6:00 pm with rotating weekends
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PTCB Certification

  • Must be able to communicate and problem solve effectively with all educational levels and with a variety of professional disciplines as well as with patients, families, staff and physicians
  • Requires independent thinking, excellent communication, listening, writing, and analytical skills
  • Requires strong organizational, operational and time management skills with the ability to coordinate multiple activities simultaneously
