Job Summary NREL is seeking a student intern to support technical analysis projects in the Engineering and Modeling Group, Integrated Applications Center (IAC), Energy Systems Integration (ESI) directorate. The Center helps clients including federal agencies, state and local governments, communities, and the private sector to develop energy strategies, analyze opportunities, and implement an integrated portfolio of renewable energy (RE) and energy efficiency (EE) technologies to meet energy goals. In this internship, the student will use EE and RE analysis tools to assist NREL engineers in evaluating EE and RE opportunities for federal agencies, universities, and communities. This intern will also work directly with senior engineers on new technology demonstration projects for the General Services Administration (GSA) Green Proving Ground (GPG) and the Department of Defense (DoD) Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP). The GSA GPG and DoD ESTCP programs utilizes GSA and DoD’s real estate portfolio to test and evaluate innovative and underutilized sustainable building technologies and practices. NREL’s role is to design and install research grade data acquisition systems and monitor the performance of the technologies over a 6 month to one year period and create technical reports summarizing the technologies’ performance and deployment potential at other GSA and DoD sites. The intern will be responsible for helping to analyze technology performance data, develop regression based performance models, and writing technical reports. Specific Job Duties include: • Conduct research and disseminate information on emerging energy efficiency technologies. • Review measurement and verification plans created by technical POC’s for ESTCP technology demonstrations. • Download data from NREL data loggers and / or SkySpark and process measurement and verification data. • Weather normalize performance data and create regression based performance models using Microsoft Excel, SkySpark, R or other applicable statistical modeling programs. • Create energy models of evaluated technologies in order to model energy savings at the demonstration site and / or other applicable facility types using Open Studio, Energy Plus, or other applicable building energy modeling programs. • Write technical reports for new technology demonstration projects. • Correspond with clients regarding demonstration data, performance results and additional data needs. • Present results to clients and revise results and reports in response to client comments. • Evaluate technical and economic feasibility of energy efficiency and renewable energy projects using EE and RE analysis tools such as eQUEST, Open Studio, REopt, SAM, HOMER, and RetScreen. Required Education, Experience, and SkillsMust be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Preferred Qualifications • Experience using EE/RE software tools such as Open Studio, Energy Plus, eQUEST, Trane Trace, SAM, HOMER, and RETscreen • Experience applying engineering skills to EE and RE problems. • Experience conducting statistical analysis using software products such as Microsoft Excel or R • Experience using scripting languages for processing large quantities of M&V performance data. .
