Performs a variety of technical duties related to diagnostic testing of animals in a laboratory environment including clinical pathology, hematology, parasitology, microbiology, molecular diagnostics, necropsies and histopathology. Testing includes, but is not limited to, conducting physical examinations of animals, collecting samples, performing chemical and biological tests, conducting experiments, and making determinations to obtain data in support of research. Compiles and documents procedures and results; communicates results to investigatory and veterinary staff in a professional manner. Facilitates quarterly Morbidity and Mortality meetings with vets and CMS staff. Organizes, schedules, summarizes, and provides follow-up on all veterinary and CMS staff Morbidity and Mortality meetings. Coordinates with direct supervisor and/ or Assistant Director, Deputy Chief of Clinical Services to schedule quarterly meetings with CMS staff. Evaluates potential problems relating to the health and social welfare of animals and notifies supervisor of perceived problems. Assists in coordinating and scheduling events to facilitate the performance of procedures related to research projects; participates in the performance of routine and standardized tests to include weighing animals, obtaining specimens, and observing behavioral patterns. Serves as liaison to the veterinarinan by providing health care to the animals; performs initial observations of rodent health requests and administers initial treatments; assists in initial assessment and treatment of emergency health requests as instructed or required. Performs a variety of complex technical clinical duties, as directed by supervisor, that include, but are not limited to, venipuncture of varying sites on multiple species, cathetarization, drug administration, surgical assistance, anesthesia monitoring, post-operative care, health assessment, and injections. Formulates and administers special diet
s to ensure adequate quantities of vitamins and trace mineral elements are provided; determines animal food needs and places regular food orders with vendors, ensuring optimum cost and variety in diet; feeds and waters animals according to schedule. Provides rodent trainings for Prinicipal Investigators, DLAR staff (both clinical and husbandry team), and maintains the rodent colony for training purposes. Serves as primary technician or point of contact for providing rodent technical/surgical core services for the Duke University Medical Center research community. Anesthetizes animals as required and serves as circulating surgical assistant during procedures requiring anesthetized animals; assists in animal surgery as requested. Administers routine, post-operative and daily treatments to animals as instructed, prescribed and/or required; assists in diagnostic treatments such as performing rountine hematologic and parasitologic tests and collecting blood and other diagnostic specimens. Performs rodent and other small animal necropsies; assists with large animal necropsies and prepare tissues for histopathology. Follows all other relevant DLAR standard operating procedures and IACUC protocols. As directed by manager, confers with principal investigators and their laboratory staff to plan diagnostic testing needed for experimental schedules, discusses animal health concerns and sample collection requirements, and assists in techinical training of research staff and some procedures/protocols. Assists in billing of lab services. Completes specialized projects as assigned. Assists with Behavioral and Enrichment daily responsibilities, when needed. Maintains rodent health logs and medical records, regulatory paperwork, surgical records, etc. in compliance with DLAR standard operating procedures and regulatory agencies that oversee laboratory animal research. Performs on-call requirements as assigned which include weekend and holiday rotations. LAT certification desirable.
