Position Summary:

Leverage technical expertise and leadership to assure safety and quality of Kroger branded products. Work closely with and monitor manufacturing or fresh food facilities to maintain relevant Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) certification. Ensure all labeling and packaging meets legal requirements. Demonstrate the company’s core values of respect, honesty, integrity, diversity, inclusion and safety.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Provide guidance to manufacturing or fresh food facilities to implement, achieve and maintain relevant GFSI certification including Safe Quality Food (SQF) level 3; oversee facility compliance to GFSI certification body as well as company standards
  • Develop, maintain and improve food safety and quality plans for all processes at food facilities, including inspection plans, product testing protocols and methodologies
  • Perform regulatory food safety, sanitation compliance and quality systems audits and issue written reports
  • Help facilities develop improvement action plans; closely monitor progress against objectives
  • Develop and maintain GFSI or SQF (level 3) policies, procedures, training materials, logs, documentation, certificates of analysis, product specification sheets and records to ensure certification standards are met
  • Analyze customer comments; partner with facilities to resolve product quality/food safety issues
  • Collaborate with product development teams to maintain/improve finished product specifications
  • Compile and analyze statistical data and product specification information to determine standards; help establish finished product quality/reliability expectations
  • Oversee corrective action processes to ensure thorough analysis and timely completion of root cause/corrective actions; ensure effective, sustainable changes to prevent reoccurrence
  • Ensure effective environmental monitoring programs are established and followed
  • Identify and drive continuous improvement
  • Travel to manufacturing and fresh food facilities for quality and regulatory compliance audits
  • Accountable to the Kroger Manufacturing Food Safety and Quality Principles

Minimum Position Qualifications/Education: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in food science technology, dairy or bakery science, food microbiology or related field
  • 5 years of experience in quality assurance and food safety/quality systems in a fresh food preparation or manufacturing environment
  • Advanced knowledge of food microbiology, refrigerated foods, USDA regulation, specialty ingredient or supplement regulation
  • Strong critical thinking and problem solving skill
  • Attention to detail with a high degree of precision
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated excellence in project management and execution
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills
  • Able to provide leadership to promote quality concepts/principles and to develop/administer the Kroger Co. Quality Management System (pay level - 9)
  • Experience and expertise to validate changes to food safety fundamentals, food safety plans and food quality plans that impact the Kroger manufacturing network’s ability to deliver, safe quality food (pay level - 9)
Desired Previous Job Experience:
  • 2 years of quality assurance plant experience
  • Experience with statistical process control (SPC) and Lean/Six Sigma
  • Experience implementing/maintaining robust quality systems (e.g. ISO 9001, 22000, SQF, BRC)
  • Proficient with product lifecycle management (PLM), Infinity and SharePoint
