JOB SUMMARY
 

The Director, Learning Development is responsible for the design and development of products utilizing a variety of delivery methodologies, as well as leading the design and development efforts of Instructional Designers. The Director, Learning Development supports a collection of brands for design and development efforts inclusive of the broad managed, franchise, management and hourly audiences. This position requires leadership, strong project management, instructional design expertise, development and client management experience. The Director, Learning Development will lead Instructional Designers and/or external vendors in the design and development of learning items. The Director, Learning Development will have Instructional Designers report directly to them, in addition to directing the work of a larger cadre of internal and external design teams.

 

CANDIDATE PROFILE

 

Education and Experience

  • BA/BS (or equivalent) in instructional design, human resources, or related field required.
  • 7+ years of instructional design and development experience.
  • Significant design and development experience and demonstrated ability in applying adult learning theory and iterative instructional design methodologies (i.e., Successive Approximation Model (SAM)), using a variety of innovative approaches.
  • Able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment; experience operating in a matrix environment.
  • Strong communication and directional capabilities when working with an external vendor to ensure development success.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Program and project management expertise.
  • Strong development experience using Rapid Development tools, e.g., Articulate, Storyline, Captivate, Lectora, Adobe Creative Cloud Applications.
 
Preferred Experience
  • Design and development experience for hospitality, brand or service related organization.
  • Experience in publishing and testing in a learning management system.
  • Proven experience in development of multiple learning modalities, i.e., mobile, online.
  • Graduate degree in Education, Instructional Design, or related field.
  • Project management certification.
 
CORE WORK ACTIVITIES
 
Design & Development
  • Scope the learning and development needs for the brands to identify the resources, learning objectives, output milestones, budget, and timeline for each project.
  • Determine whether to build, buy or curate content to meet the needs of the client.
  • Strong experience building learning items from analysis, design and storyboard, development, project input and client presentation.
  • Firsthand development responsibilities for complex, highly visible projects that require senior learning leadership direction and support.
  • Strong leadership and ability to interact with subject matter experts across a variety of clients, e.g., brand or discipline, to design and develop effective learning solutions.
  • Clearly and concisely present ideas to clients on learning item design.
  • Execute learning item(s) review with client to secure sign-off at each designated milestone to keep the project on time and on budget.
  • Package multiple items to create curriculum, as appropriate.
  • Build and test items in learning management system as part of the deployment activities.
  • Partner with L+D Performance Advisor in annual learning initiative planning for the designated client(s).
  • Partner with L+D Performance Advisor to build and develop strong client relationships.
  • Partner with L+D Experience Design for creative for large design projects providing clients’ perspective and plan for the output for the learning items.
  • Partner with L+D Communication, L+D Delivery, Continent PMO / Communications / Implementation groups to implement and rollout learning programs as appropriate.

  • Partner with Learning Operations team to ensure that all projects are accounted for through Governance & Planning processes.
  • Coordinates and implements work and projects for instructional designers and/or external vendors (e.g., capacity management)
  • Generates and provides accurate and timely results in the form of reports, presentations, etc.
  • Analyzes information and evaluates results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
  • Develops specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish work.
  • Sets and tracks goal progress for self and others.
