Summary: Community Based Counselor II will provide direct counseling & treatment interventions to children, youth, and adults who are in psychiatric crisis and/or at risk of out of home placement to intervene and stabilize emotional and behavioral problems.

Education: Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP-C): A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a human services field and at least one year clinical experience providing direct services to adults with a mental health diagnosis. Master's degree preferred. Licensed or License-eligible highly preferred. Or, Qualified Mental Health Professional-Eligible (QMHP-E): A minimum of a bachelor's degree in a human services field from an accredited college without one year of clinical experience; or a bachelor's degree from an accredited college in an unrelated field and is enrolled in a Master's or Doctoral clinical program and is actively taking at least 3 credits per semester. Staff hired as a QMHP-E must participate in Intercept's monthly DBHDS approved training curriculum, and participate in weekly supervision with a LMHP.

Experience: 1-3 years' clinical experience providing direct services to adults and/or youth with a mental health diagnosis. Active enrollment in a Master's or Ph.D. clinical program will be considered in lieu of clinical experience. Essential duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

CLIENT COUNSELING
  • Conduct counseling & treatment interventions for clients.
  • Develop treatment plans based on recommended goals identified in clients' assessments.
  • Provide intensive individual counseling, family counseling, 1:1 therapeutic counseling, psychoeducational support services, and behavioral support services to meet individual client needs.
  • Interact with all clients in accordance with the Individual Service Plan and therapeutic process guidelines.
  • Initiate and facilitate verbal de-escalation techniques and strategies to assist the client in maintaining self-control.
  • Exercise client interventions via the least restrictive option to protect clients from harming self or others.
  • Coordinate client services closely with other staff and community service providers to ensure the appropriateness of treatment modalities and services being provided.
  • Serve as liaison to referral sources and families regarding progress and needs (attending meetings, court hearings, etc.).
  • Develop therapeutic relationships with clients that will encourage positive responses to treatment interventions.
  • Provide 24-hour emergency client response as needed.
  • Assess, evaluate and monitor the safety of clients and others at all times.
  • Notify Supervisor of any significant client medical complaint(s), unusual events, accidents, medical problems, property damage or maintenance concern, etc.
  • Administer first aid to clients in response to minor medical problems.
ADMINISTRATIVE
  • Maintain fluency in knowledge and practice of all Medicaid and DBHDS requirements.
  • Participate in weekly supervision to review treatment objectives, interventions utilized, and clients' progress towards treatment goals.
  • Develop, maintain, and effectively implement client discharge plans (including mobilization of resources for ongoing maintenance, rehabilitation & recovery).
  • Maintain high quality, punctual documentation of case work consistent with program and licensure policies.
  • Participate in initial & ongoing staff training and/or seminar presentations as requested.

LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Current driver's license, safe automobile, and current and sufficient auto insurance. Tuberculosis test/screening, CPR & First Aid Certification, and behavior management training certification. QMHP-C, or QMHP-E certification required.

  • Phone-related tasks require the ability to hear and speak.
  • Working with clients includes having the physical abilities to perform physical restraints( in accordance with requirements set forth by Crisis Wave or other behavioral management training).
  • Client supports occasionally requires the ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and taste or smell.
  • Transporting clients and recreational equipment requires operating a motor vehicle for 1-2 hours at a time, and may require to lifting or moving up to 10 pounds.
  • Copying, filing, and record keeping duties require the ability to stand, sit, and move from position to position easily.
  • Computer work requires the ability to input data from a keyboard quickly and efficiently (use of fingers/ability to feel).
  • Close computer work requires clear vision as well as ability to adjust focus when returning to other tasks.
