About this job

The Associate Chief of Staff, Primary Care Service reports to the Office of the Chief of Staff and is responsible for the leadership of over fifty primary care providers including all aspects of the organization and delivery of clinical services for the Medical Center. The Chief is accountable for ensuring quality, cost effective, accessible care provided with excellence in patient satisfaction. The Chief must demonstrate leadership in interpreting and supporting the MC's mission, vision and values, while operating in accordance with VHA and Medical Center policies and standards of federal professional and accrediting agencies external to VHA such as Joint Commission.The responsibilities of the position includes:
  • Adhering to the Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules and Regulations.
  • Providing direction and support to PC regarding clinical care and academic affairs.
  • Reviewing quality control and quality improvement procedures.
  • Participating/reviewing and documenting performance improvement activities.
  • Serving as an active member of various Medical Center committees.
  • Interpreting metrics and data and apply to enhance quality and safety.
  • Providing accurate, concise, timely documentation of care in the electronic medical record (Computerized Patient Record System - CPRS) on each patient care occurrence.
  • Maintaining a peer review process for primary care clinicians.
  • Collaborating with the Chief of Staff to develop and execute a strategic plan for the service line.
  • Acting in matters such as promotions, selections, on the job training, awards, EEO complaints, labor relations, disciplinary actions, training, and career development.
  • Developing mechanisms to assure staff competency and continuing education compliance including a comprehensive new employee
orientation program.
  • Establishing employee performance plans that align with Agency and Departmental goals and objectives, and is responsible for
evaluating and communicating employee performance.
  • Empowering staff at the lowest level.
  • Delegating and holding accountable direct reports.
  • Ensuring that continuing education is maintained for service line staff.
  • Maintaining a 20% primary care clinical presence in internal medicine or family practice.
Work Schedule: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m, Monday - Friday and occasional Saturday's 8:00 a.m. - Noon. Note: there is no dedicated call,
however, all VA physicians are obligated 24 hours a day per policy.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.
Preferred Experience: Board Certification in Family Practice or Internal Medicine perferred.
