Summary

This is a hybrid role supporting the Business Development Team (BDT) and Operations.  The Tooling Team Leader is responsible for driving production efficiencies and customer quality through advanced mold design review, quality tool construction techniques, and established tooling preventive maintenance processes.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Business Development Team Functions:

  1. Work closely with BDT to assess the manufacturing feasibility of new customer designs.

  2. Quote new tooling and tooling ECN activity.

  3. Specify the construction of new tooling to achieve optimum part quality and extended tool life.

  4. Coordinate cross-functional tool design reviews to assure new tooling is designed and built in accordance with PCI manufacturing requirements.

  5. Maintain and continuously improve PCI tooling standards.  This includes research of new materials, systems, predictive technologies, and surface treatments.

    Production Tooling Functions:

  1. Consult and advise tool room personnel on mold activities.

  2. Investigate potential tooling issues to identify and confirm root cause, and to implement corrective action.

  3. Identify and develop new tooling and auxiliary equipment vendors.

  4. Develop Human Resource staffing plans and mentor apprentice tool makers.

  5. Construct capital expenditure budgets for tool room equipment.

  1. Perform injection mold maintenance to include disassembly, cleaning, insert changing, and basic repair.
  2. Maintain the preventive maintenance records for tooling per established procedures.
  3. Assure tool readiness according to the production schedule.
  4. Recommend changes required to part design, tool design or equipment capability to achieve acceptable quality and cost requirements.
  5. Participate and offer input to corrective and preventive action and continuous improvement projects.
  6. Maintain proper housekeeping practices and mold storage requirements.
  1. Communicate with company employees in a positive, team-oriented manner.

  2. Follow and comply with all safety and work rules and regulations.  Maintain departmental housekeeping and standards.

  3. This position will manage all tooling timelines and costs associated with outside vendors.  (welding, polishing, large repair)

  4. This position works to support in press tooling PM activity in accordance to production demands.

  5. This position works to provide quotes and timelines for all work needing to be done at OSVs. This role will be managing costs and lead time adherence according to the original OSV quote.

  6. This role supports the BDT group by assisting in the assessment of new tooling designs and provides input to assist in optimal tool design and optimal ability to process the associated material and part geometry for scientific molding purposes.    

  7. This position will assist sales in estimating customer tooling annual repair budgets if required.

  8. This position will provide support and mentoring to all tooling apprenticeships that come through the toolroom.

  9. This position will assist in any other requirements as indicated by management including trips to respective customers to explain needed ECNs and part modifications to run fully capable tooling.     

     

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Injection mold tooling background.

  • Working knowledge of GD&T.

  • Ability to clearly communicate technically complex issues across internal and external channels.

  • Experience with tool design and construction methods for bi-injection and insert molding.

  • Experience with mold fill simulation software.

  • Journeyman toolmaker status or applicable work experience.

  • Experience with managing a toolroom operation.
