Responsibilities and Qualifications

Provides quality medical nutrition therapy and education for patients. Collaborates with medical staff, nursing and appropriate ancillary departments to provide timely and effective implementation of nutrition care plans. Provides leadership coverage of the Food and Enviromental Service Departments in conjunction with and during the absence of the Food Service Manager. Assist with daily duties (i.e., ordering, inventory, cash control) and special event operations (i.e., catering, state accredication surveys, menu development). Represents the Nutrition Service Department in the Safety and Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee meetings.

Safety/Risk Managementa. Follows policy and procedures for incident report.b. Follows confidentiality policies and proceduresc. Complies with infection control guidelines.d. Knows MSDS book use and location.e. Complies with patient rights and regulations.

Coordination of Servicesa. Assists with leadership in both EVS and Nutrition Services.b Prioritizes appropriately and ensures Support Services coworkers are effective with their time.c. Works effectively as a multidisciplinary team member.d. Provides nutrition care of patient with appropriate follow-up per policy/procedure.e. Professional, courteous interaction with patient, peers, and other hospital personnel.f. Works closely with the manager and supervisor of Support Services to remain up to date with new policy and procedures effecting the departments.g. Confers with other clinical staff on unusually complex Assessment/education situations.

Complex Aspectsa. Develops and implements nutrition education programs and education materials.b. Assists with orientation/teaching of new staff and dietetic students.c Participates in department projects, committees and inservices.d. Teaches nutrition specific classes and department orientation for the hospital.e. Assumes primary responsibility for cash/credit handling, record keeping, and end of month reports.f. Ensures availability and selection of enteral tube feeding products.

Primary Aspectsa. Utilizes assessment skills to identify existing or potential nutrition risk factors and documents assessments, follow-up monitoring and education in medical record and department patient care record in an accurate and a timely manner.b. Interviews patient/client family to obtain information needed to develop and provide an appropriate diet/nutrition education plan.c. Works in collaboration with the nurse educator to maintain currency of the nutrition care plan design.d.. Assesses patients for tube feeding/TPN/PPN. Calculates energy, protein, fluid and other nutrient needs for these patients. Translates these needs into recommended action.e. Works towards achieving a high rating on quarterly health inspection for department/area.f. Works closely with the manager and supervisor of Support Services to ensure coworker compliance with policies, procedures, and tasklists.g. Provides assistance with preparing financial reports. (end of month, etc.)h. Assumes responsibility with the manager for the inventory and ordering of all needed Nutritional Services food and supplies.i. Provides on-call services every other weekend for the department.

Communication Managementa. Demonstrates good customer and guest relation skills.b Demonstrates active listening skills.c. Demonstrates proper telephone management techniques.e. Encourages teamwork and serves as a role model to EVS and Nutrition Services.

Technologya. Maintains knowledge base through continuing education and applies knowledge to current practice of medical nutrition careb Demonstrates knowledge of patient information system, current computer/printer functions.

Qualifications:

Education: Must be a graduate of an American Dietetic Association (ADA) approved Dietetic Program. Bachelors or Masters degree program. Licensure: Must have a current Dietitian license in the State of Missouri. Experience: Must have at least one year prior health care experience working in a food service department.Certifications: Other: Preferred Education: Preferred Licensure: Preferred Experience: One to two years experience working in both the clinical and business aspect of a health care kitchen.
