TITLE: Associate Claims Representative - Trainee

Our Trainee Program is an intensive 12 week program designed to develop skills necessary for a successful insurance career. Learn about handling claims along with the roles within our other departments and their functions. Additionally, you'll have access to leadership to provide a knowledgeable and supportive network.

REPORTS TO: Claims Unit Manager

General Summary:
The entry level position is designed for continuous career growth into the role of Claim Representative. The position will learn to investigate and evaluate claims as well as resolve claims of a minor to moderate value. Formal training on claims handling, coverage investigations, negotiations, settlements, diary management, and overall claims resolution are part of the program.

Essential Functions:
  • Complies with company procedures and the State Fair Claims Practices Act.
  • Reviews policies and claim forms, and manages all external communication with insureds, claimants, and other contacts associated with the claim to determine damages.
  • Plans and manages the claim investigation, including interviewing all parties involved, collecting and evaluating documentation, and securing evidence to analyze coverage, determine liability, compensation, and extent of damages.
  • Maintains accurate claims and investigative reports.
  • Handles administrative responsibilities associated with the processing and payment of claims. Records and updates status notes, documents results of external information gathering, and administers correspondence to customers regarding the status of their claims.
  • Issues loss and expense payments within stated authority and complies with check security procedures.
  • Works in a team environment to promote and support unit, department, and organizational goals; Communicates effectively, gets along with co-workers, and deals with colleagues effectively and professionally.
  • Performs other duties assigned.

    Marginal Functions:
  • Limited travel for agency visits.
  • Attends training classes, seminars, and training either at home office and off-site locations.
  • Participates in continuing education.
  • Attends monthly and quarterly meetings.
  • Performs various administrative duties to keep files in order and current.

    Minimum Qualifications:
  • College degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task; Experience in a production environment where time management, work load prioritization, case management, record keeping and documentation, accountability and follow up are key priorities
  • Ability to develop and maintain customer relationships.
  • Strong interpersonal skills in the areas of verbal, written, presentation delivery, and conflict resolution.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.

    6. Proficient in operating a PC.

    7. Ability to focus in a fast-paced environment where accruacy is key.

    Working Conditions:
Normal office working conditions
Sitting for extended periods of time
Frequent use of computer and associated eye strain and fatigue
Handling numerous phone calls in a fast paced environment
Stress associated with varying claim volume, upset customers, making difficult decisions, and meeting deadlines

Supervision Received:
Occasional supervision, since most duties are repetitive and related, with standard instructions and procedures as guides. Unusual problems are referred, frequently with suggestions for correction.
