JOB SUMMARY

As a member of the Global Insurance team, the Sr. Director, Insurance supporting US & Canada operations will serve as leader or consultant on work that requires Risk insurance expertise; lead efforts to compile, model, analyze and interpret data as necessary; and serve as a liaison between the discipline and other Risk Management groups, representing the Global Insurance and Risk Management’s interests.

 

He/she will manage cross discipline risk management issues for the Americas as well as take a leadership role in the placement of Marriott’s domestic primary and global excess casualty insurance programs.  This individual will oversee the placement of other global insurance placements on behalf of the company.  He//she will also represent the risk management department on high level cross discipline owner issues. 

 

He/she must be adept at tapping diverse sources of information, identifying profitable opportunities, anticipating challenges, devising and executing breakthrough strategies/approaches to deliver against the current and future business priorities, and engaging and partnering with key business leaders, thereby strengthening Marriott’s competitive advantage through excellence in risk management.

EXPECTED CONTRIBUTIONS
  • Provide direction for all insurance and risk management contractual issues for all brands within the Americas organization as well as direct responsibility for certain mixed-use and Ritz-Carlton brand. He/she will also provide oversight to the Director, Contracts who will oversee all other brands.
  • Partner with VP, Insurance on M&A due diligence efforts.
  • Partner with VP, Insurance with the placement strategy and structure for the Marriott domestic primary and global excess policies and will negotiate and manage the placement of such policies. 
  • Manage team with the placement of various insurance policies for the company including but not limited to: financial products policies, employment practices, fidelity, fiduciary, aviation and other policies.
  • Serve as the iT insurance business partner by advocating sound financial and business decisions for risk transfer, risk avoidance or risk acceptance.  He/she will develop the strategy and make recommendations to Risk Management Senior Leadership for the company’s Cyber and Privacy Liability program. He/she will act as a member of the Marriott Security and Privacy Governance Committee and be responsible for insurance presentations to the Committee.
  • Oversee with the input of the VP, Insurance, the corporate insurance needs for new business ventures such as PlacePass and other similar BMSC ventures.
  • Lead team responsible for complex owner insurance inquiries in regard to understanding Marriott’s insurance program coverages, allocations and claims from major hotel portfolio owners, mixed-use projects and Ritz-Carlton hotels.
  • Lead team that support Marriott’s US and Canada brand portfolio in regards to development and operational needs with review of contractual insurance provisions.
  • Act as subject matter expert globally for Mixed-Use project development and operational needs with review of contract provisions.
  • Manage and identify business requirements and liaise with internal systems group as respects the continued development of Vault.
  • Facilitate corporate-wide insurance projects as directed by the Senior Vice President, Risk Management and/or Vice President, Insurance.
  • Interface with Global Safety & Security to identify and define risk mitigation or loss trend strategies.
  • Partner with Global Safety & Security representative in the analysis and review of Business Case Analyses (BCA).  Interface with Global Safety & Security at an enterprise level to identify and define risk mitigation or loss trend strategies.
  • Provide oversight of any Marriott interest with international construction insurance programs.
  • Assist in the change management and communications (within Marriott International and with Owners) related to implementation and launches of programs.  Supports, manages and initiates change within the organization, taking steps to remove barriers or to accelerate its pace.
  •    Champion leadership development and workforce planning priorities by personally assessing, selecting, retaining and developing diverse, high-caliber talent that can lead the organization today and strengthen the leadership bench for the future. Work with Human Resources to anticipate future talent needs based on business growth plans, and allocates resources appropriately.
CANDIDATE PROFILE
Key Talents and Experience
  • Minimum of 10 years of corporate risk management experience, lodging or related industry a plus.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a management role; demonstrated success leading and developing others in a complex, service-intensive, deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong leader of people – ability to create compelling vision, demonstrate flexibility in approach, and motivate others (to achieve desired results; ability to work in a matrix organization and make things happen without having to own all of the resources; leverages shared resources to achieve results.
  • Demonstrated expertise with the placement of large and complex commercial insurance programs and contract review. 
  • Strong negotiation skills and the ability to understand the structure of deals and Marriott economics.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to balance highly technical insurance issues within the parameter of a business transaction.
  • Strong and effective negotiation skills/experience and ability to work in a consulting capacity.
  • Exhibits strong functional leadership and finance knowledge; able to leverage this strength to influence business team strategies and decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to formulate creative solutions for complex business issues, mitigating risk and maximizing stakeholder satisfaction.

Education and Professional Certification

  • Baccalaureate degree in related discipline required
  • ARM and CPCU highly desirable.
