POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Energy Commodity & Risk Management functions as the Strategic Business Leader of Energy & Waste Services* Procurement for the continent and drives the Marriott vision to be a Global hospitality leader in sustainable environmental practices, reducing and or stabilizing energy commodity and waste services costs and balancing market risk.  This position provides a high level of technical expertise in, energy& waste services procurement and is responsible for ensuring that Marriott’s Commodity & Risk Strategy is properly executed on behalf of the managed properties. This position has responsibility for developing appropriate purchasing strategies, RFPs, bid analyses and communications to ensure that commodity pricing is at the lowest possible cost and that the contracting plan is at minimal risk to disrupt service to the hotels.  The Director of Energy Commodity & Risk Management is a Subject Matter Expert in utility pricing and billing for regulated and non-regulated markets; and has thorough knowledge of hotel operations and related energy volume profiles.  This leadership role is the first line of support for properties, owners, and Marriott Associates on all energy procurement issues and is responsible for setting and managing heat, light, and power budgets for the properties in the continent.  Additionally, this Director provides comprehensive bid analysis, strategic recommendations to senior Finance and Engineering leaders, and relevant training and issue resolution presentations to Engineers, General Managers, Senior Leadership, Owners, and other key stakeholders on commodity procurement strategies. This leader must always maintain all-inclusive shared source records of all; Contract hedge positions and re-compete dates, RFPs, bid responses, bid analysis, owner communications, strategic contracting recommendations, contracting decisions, commodity contracts and all associated email threads.


EXPECTED CONTRIBUTIONS
  • Provides strategic business and functional leadership to property General Managers and Engineers.  Executes consistent business processes for properties within area of responsibility; shares best practices with the broader organization. Builds support for and champions key organizational objectives.  Takes calculated risks to move properties forward by seizing critical contracting opportunities.  Acts and calls attention to a crisis or heightened awareness of a need for change.  Introduces needed change even in the face of opposition.
  • Ensures that contracting programs and efforts are consistent with and support efforts to improve energy efficiency.  Collaborates with Director of Data & Reporting in developing properties’ annual heat, light, power and waste services rate recommendations.  
  • Collaborates with discipline leadership and consultants to negotiate energy and waste services contracts in all eligible markets throughout the Americas to achieve optimal pricing that protects against price spikes, reduces volatility and minimizes operating costs over the long-term.
  • Ensures utilization of best-in-class Consultants for procurement support, performs Consulting Services RFP and competitive analysis when Consultant reevaluations needed.
  • Owns Consultant Services scopes of work, RFPs and bid analysis processes to ensure all energy and waste services contract re-competes are thorough, timely and sufficiently documented.
  • Develops a trusting and respectful business partnership with property ownership through a cadence of clear communications and by meeting or exceeding energy commodity contracting expectations.
  • Provides support to all managed properties on contracts, budget guidance and commodity issues and questions.
  • Develops a long-term plan for procuring energy and waste services for all markets while mitigating risk and obtains buy in on strategy from Legal, Finance, Risk Management and Operations management.
  • Develops & maintains specifications and requirements for commodity contracts while storing and administering such contracts to support energy needs.
  • Utilizes legal resources as necessary to fully review and ensure all contracts protect Marriott and our Owner’s from risk and/or damages.
  • Builds positive relationships with property management teams, utility providers, energy providers, consultants, regional waste services strategic account representatives and owners.
  • Develops and publishes energy contract and cost information to keep hotels informed and educated on key regional energy strategies.
  • Develops a commodity performance metric to align with risk policy.
  • Researches utility bill data and creates highly accurate historical use volumes by month as basis for hedge strategy.
  • Creates high quality commodity purchase strategy communication and overview documentation for Finance organization and ownership groups.  Ensures all owner related contract communications are completed, tracked, documented and archived for future reference.
  • Manages Energy Contracts and Waste Services Contracts database.
  • Manages and regularly shares hedge position and contract termination tracking documentation
  • Provides re-compete and hedging strategy outlook to Senior Director on Monthly basis
  •  Employs contracting strategies and monitors industry trends to minimize potential for cost increases due to a supplier encountering financial problems.  Assist Energy Director peers to ensures that Marriott’s environmental policies are being executed at the property level.
  • Reviews associated utility market controllable expenses such as, heat, light, power, water consumption and waste services as basis for contracting decision process.
  • Supports Director of Data & Reporting, Regional Engineers and Regional Finance in period end critiques on HLP variances that are commodity strategy based.
  • Travel as necessary, typically 10- 15% of time.
  • Prepares and delivers annual owner portfolio commodity strategy communication and overviews to maintain owner confidence and support of program.  
  • Performs other duties as assigned to meet business needs.
 

* “Waste Services” include service and product offerings provided to Marriott Hotels related to municipal solid waste, recycling, organics, construction & demolition (C&D), universal waste and other waste-related items.

CANDIDATE PROFILE - KEY TALENTS AND EXPERIENCE DESIRED

Experience

  • Finance leadership for hotel or similar experience
  • MEP.  engineering, building technology, and/or 5+ years facilities operation.
  • Six plus years’ experience in energy industry, facility management, industrial and commercial energy engineering, or consulting engineering.
  • 3+ years of establishing hedge strategies, RFP, bid analysis and commodity contracting
Skills and Knowledge
  • Knowledge of market trends, cost, availability, and distribution of utilities.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with the myriad utility rate, transportation, capacity and fee structures.
  • Knowledge of energy industry infrastructure and practices.
  • Knowledge of utility deregulation strategies and rate structures.
  • Knowledge of waste, recycling and organics markets and service offerings.
  • Ability to research utility use/cost histories and establish multi-layer, multi- year hedge strategies
  • Ability to negotiate long and short-term utility and waste services contracts.
  • Advanced level MS Excel data analysis skill to include, Macros, regression, pivot tables etc.
  • Mastery of MS Office 365 e applications.  
  • Strong modeling and data analysis skills.
  • Financial Management skills e.g., ability to analyze P&L statements, develop operating budgets, forecasting, and capital expenditure planning.
  • Solid administrative, presentation, training, and program reporting skills.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong Project Management skills.
  • Strong Negotiating Skills.
  • Ability to work well in teams, as well as think and work independently, the ability to multi-task, and the desire to work in a fast-paced office environment.
  • Good knowledge of building operations: electrical, mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and general building practices.
  • Ability to read and use utility tariffs.

Education or Certification

  • BS Degree in Energy, Finance, Accounting, Procurement, or equivalent industry experience.
  • MBA degree in Finance or Business preferred
  • Certified Energy Procurement CEP Certification, or similar certifications in energy management preferred.
  • Fluent in Spanish and/or Portuguese a plus
