PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
Working in fast-paced distribution facility, operating over-the-road tractor and trailer to deliver finished goods to customers. Responsible for following all traffic laws and meeting Ace performance standards. Also responsible for bringing back returned merchandise, supplies, and backhauls to the warehouse.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES:
Operate a tractor and trailer to deliver merchandise on assigned routes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspection according to FMCSA regulations to ensure equipment being operated is in safe operating condition.
2. May assist in loading trailer with freight or supplies.
3. Unload freight at each retailer stop, either individually or with the use of hand or electric pallet jack.
4. Interact with store employees at each delivery stop.
5. Operate equipment safely and efficiently in compliance with Ace Hardware Corporation's policies and all Federal, State and local regulations.
6. Ensure that all shipping documents are available for inspection and correct paperwork accompanies shipment when delivered.
7. Chock wheels of tractor/trailer before unloading takes place. Removes chocks before leaving warehouse or delivery destination.
8. Scan DUL with handheld scanner throughout the unload process.
9. Use trailer hydraulic liftgate to move freight from the trailer to the ground.
10. May pick up backhaul freight on the way back to the warehouse.
11. Must be able to enter data into an onboard computer system accurately and timely.
12. Provide any minor service duties, e.g., air in tires, gasoline, water, oil. Report any maintenance needs/malfunctions to the Traffic department.
13. Clean up small spills/leaks from merchandise in trailer. May involve hazardous materials.
14. May switch trailers between doors in the warehouse yard as necessary.
15. Comply with all other company policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook and Driver Handbook.

Shift hours: Varies. Could be up to 14 hours of on duty time, and up to 11 hours of driving time.

WORKING CONDITIONS/CONTEXT:
  • Requires walking, bending or twisting, stooping, climbing, reaching, carrying, grasping.
  • Requires the ability to drive, steer, and control material moving equipment.
  • Requires using hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools or controls.
  • Requires standing.
  • Requires face-to-face discussions with individuals or teams.
  • Requires working in very hot (above 90 F degrees) or cold (below 50 F degrees) temperatures.
  • Requires repeating the same physical activities or mental activities over and over.
  • Requires being exact or highly accurate.
  • Requires working indoors in non-controlled environmental conditions.
  • Moderate noise, conditions could include odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation.

    WORK ACTIVITIES:
  • Performs a safety and mechanical check of all equipment.
  • Climbs into and out of the tractor cab throughout the route delivery process.
  • Operates the lift gate at the back of the trailer throughout the delivery process, uses the lift gate to enter/exit the trailer.
  • Occasionally will unload freight by hand.
  • Uses pallet jack to move product to the rear of the trailer, and off the lift gate once it's lowered.
  • Picks up returned freight, paperwork and supplies from each store delivery.
  • Upon return to the warehouse, will drop trailer in proper location, and park tractor, securing all equipment.
  • Return paperwork to the proper location at the warehouse.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    ? Valid state Commercial Driver's License with hazmat endorsement (or ability to obtain hazmat endorsement within 60 days of hire)
    ? Doubles endorsement (if required)
    ? Must be at least 21 years of age.
    ? Ability and willingness to work non-traditional shifts and hours.
    ? Minimum 1 year over-the-road driving experience with tractor/trailer combinations
    ? Knowledge of DOT regulations on equipment standards and inspections
    ? Must speak and read the English language sufficiently to understand highway signs and signals, converse with delivery clients, respond to official inquiries, and make entries on reports/records.
    ? Must meet the physical qualification requirement established for the USDOT (Part391, Subpart E).
    ? Must pass DOT drug screen and be enrolled in a random drug screen program.
    ? No positive test for illegal drugs for any test conducted per the rules and regulations of the USDOT.
    ? Must be able to successfully complete the Ace physical assessment test (PAT) at the facility.
