Ultrasonographer - PRN - Full-time / Part-time

Performs ultrasound scanning procedures. Reports preliminary findings and diagnoses to the radiologist. Takes anatomical pictures to demonstrate organs

Performs such exams as abdominal echoes, renal, aorta, thyroid, pelvic, obstetrical, biophysical profiles, vascular studies, testicular and breasts. Color flow studies, doppler studies, renal biopsies and fluid collections of localized areas

The ultrasonographer must follow the protocol when performing ultrasound exams and is confirmed by a sinologist

Is responsible for setting up room with appropriate supplies needed for procedure: documents the procedure on special worksheet (procedure review protocol).

Sonographer must assist the radiologist with procedure and operate the ultrasound machine and is observed by the sonologist

After completion of exam/procedure, all materials used must be put in red bags, taped, and placed

in hazardous material boxes.

Checks all films with the radiologist; consults with the radiologist about the reading of

scans and reports

If abnormalities arise, the radiologist is called in to observe real time imaging.

If there are no abnormalities, the sonographer must put films together with appropriate jacket and

paperwork and leave on the grid for the radiologist to view.

Provides written, unofficial reports of examinations

Preliminary diagnoses are documented daily in log book; includes such information as patient name, hospital number, requesting physician, patient location, and type of exam

Takes representative anatomical pictures, recognizes normal versus abnormal anatomy and exhibits knowledge of various pathological processes.

Proper protocol must be followed for each different exam that is performed, so that all quadrants of the body are displayed.

Schooling and credentials are imperative in order to recognize normal vs. abnormal anatomy.

Failure to evaluate and diagnose abnormalities may cause inconvenience to patient.

Marks films for proper definition and explanation.

For each anatomical picture taken, the sonographer must mark films properly to identify structures for the radiologist.

Follows the standard number of films to be taken for each exam.

Available for oncall status, as needed.

The sonographer must be available to take early A.M. weekend call if the need arises.

Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his/her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific jobrelated hazards.

n A.R.D.M.S. or registry eligible

n Needs one to two years to be fully proficient
