Department Overview

Applied Technology Services (ATS) is a multidisciplinary team of 120 engineers, scientists, and technicians. ATS has been providing technology based innovative, high-value services to the PG&E for 35 years .The Civil & Mechanical Engineering Services Unit provides a range of civil and mechanical testing, analysis, and inspection services to Power Generation (Hydro, Fossil, and Nuclear), Electric Transmission and Distribution, and Gas Transmission and Distribution.

Position Summary

This position is represented by Engineers & Scientists of California (ESC), Local 20, and is subject to collective bargaining. This position has a primary focus on field testing of mechanical systems and components for all PG&E Assets, including but not limited to All Types of Power Plant Machinery, Substation Equipment, Buildings, Dams, Water Systems, Gas Compressors and Pipelines, Transmission and Distribution Equipment, etc. Testing typically occurs in the field in a power plant environment, often in remote areas. Office/Lab work includes lab testing, data analysis, data reporting, planning for emergent or ongoing work, equipment maintenance and procedure development.

Job Responsibilities

* Hydro Condition Assessment: Provide technical support for engineering staff to evaluate the ability for hydro-electric power facilities to safely shutdown in addition to measuring the relative change in efficiency of hydro-electric power facilities after major maintenance or plant upgrades. Requires test pre-planning, on-site set up of temporary instrumentation, conducting tests, monitoring, diagnosis and reporting of vibration, pressure, temperature, displacement, power, and flow. The work will require the evaluation of acquired data along with the preparation of a test report.

* Mechanical Testing & Analysis: Perform product, component, material strength and durability testing that meets the testing requirements outlined in PG&E procedures, ASTM and ANSI Standards. Develop test plans, run tests, analyze data and write a report.

* Instrumentation repair and calibration: Responsible for maintaining all field instrumentation, transducers, cabling and data acquisition systems to ensure reliability for field testing.

Qualifications

Minimum:

* AA Degree in Mechanical or Electronics technology or military education equivalent or equivalent related education/technical degree

* 5 years of combined experience of any of the following: performing field testing of mechanical systems, performing power plant tests and/or material/product evaluations requiring in-depth understanding of data acquisition, instrumentation and transducers for measuring speed, force, displacement, pressure, temperature, flow, strain, voltage and current

* Experience with electrical/electronic troubleshooting, mechanical fabrication and/or design

* Ability to travel up to 50% throughout northern and central California, to include overnight travel to meet business needs

* Ability to lift, climb and perform physically demanding work

* Valid CA driver's license or ability to obtain by 1st day of hire

Desired:

* Microsoft office suite with emphasis on Excel and data graphs and presentation

* Ability to read, interpret and understand schematics and blueprints

* AutoCAD drawing familiarity

* Experience with predictive maintenance technology including vibration, lube oil analysis and generator partial discharge

* Experience with machinery alignment and setup

* Experience with LabView programming environment

* Proven ability to work safely within industrial environments

* Strong mechanical aptitude/ fabrication skills

* Experience working independently in a field environment
