Position Overview

Equal Justice Works seeks interns for a ten-week period starting on Monday, June through August . Equal Justice Works Summer interns will receive a stipend and have the opportunity to gain invaluable working experience with nonprofits, public interest law and federal programs. Each intern will be asked to perform a variety of duties below.  Interns will be expected to work up to 30 hours per week. We are looking for interns who can provide the organization with ten weeks of continuous work. Applications are due by March 16th.

The Student Debt Intern reports to the Student Debt Specialist.  The Student Debt Intern will provide research and administrative support to the unit-wide processes of the Law Student Engagement and Advocacy Unit. 

 

Specific Responsibilities

Membership

  • Updating LSP contact information on CRM
    • Updating records and adding to the LSP marketing list
  • Helping to put together presentations using participation tracking document
  • Attending 1 local presentation
  • Enter sign-in sheets from presentations into CRM

Conference and Career Fair

  • Prospect Research
    • Find new employers such as public defender offices
  • Making initial early bird calls
  • Updating student, employer and LSP guides
    • Adding new dates, new links, etc
  • Help Employers pay for career fair registration
  • Help with student registration issues

Student Engagement

  • Tweeting on the student page
  • Writing a blog post for the student justice center
  • Update and create new guides as necessary
  • Editing and writing one of each newsletter (student and jobs digest)
  • Weekly “in case you missed it” for the blog and twitter on relevant public interest news
  • Put together student representative packages
  • Updating student justice center
  • Research on State-by-State funding for law student internships/employment
  • Law Student Blog Posts – editing submitted posts and deciding which posts should win competitions and be posted online

Student Debt

  • Write one blog post for the Huffington Post
  • LRAP list updating
  • Research nonprofit organizations that may join PSLF coalition
  • Review E-Book
  • Compile survey data on PSLF usage

National Advisory Committee 

  • Helping to prepare for the annual meeting
    • Editing PowerPoints
    • Making name tent cards
    • Printing and putting together packets for the meeting
    • Note taking and type them up from meeting
  • Sit in on calls and take notes

AmeriCorps JD

  • Work with Public Programs intern to clean up the AmeriCorps JD list in CRM due to inaccuracies

Education and Experience Required:

  • Undergraduate education experience
  • Prior office or internship experience a plus

Skills:

  • Strong research, critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication
  • Innate attention to detail
  • Must be enthusiastic and adaptable; will be asked to perform a wide variety of tasks and participate in a range of projects  
  • A creative, self-starter who is able to work independently without constant direction
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word/ Excel

 

Stipend:

  • Interns that commit to working for a term of ten weeks will be given a stipend of $3,500 dollars. Disbursed in two payments, the first payment will be disbursed two weeks into the internship and the last payment will be disbursed during the last week of the internship.
  • This position is not available for course credit.
