Responsibilities and Qualifications

Responsible for assisting the Manager-Quality in the oversight of the Infection Control program for Mercy Hospital Cassville and Mercy Hospital Aurora. Responsible for the performance of activities designed to detect, control and prevent infection in order to protect the health of patients, staff and visitors. This includes evaluating patient care activities and the performance of other departments and making recommendations concerning infection control and safety issues, researching and preparing educational materials and programs designed to identify potential infection/safety hazards and reduce potential of infection. Responsible for assisting the Administrator/Director-Nursing in the overisght and delivery of education needs/requirements to the facilities' co-workers. Responsible for coordinating American Heart Association renewal courses. Works collaboratively with leaders to provide orientation and ongoing education to co-workers. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our Mission, Values and Mercy Service Standards.

Responsibilities

1. Makes routine Infection Prevention surveillance rounds to nursing units and does retrospective review of charts as necessary.

2. Performs, on a routine schedule, Environment of Care rounds in conjunction with Administration and the Manager-Plant Operations, in clinical and non clinical areas of the hospital, to ensure compliance with state and federal Infection Control regulations and identify opportunities for improvement.

3. Collaborates with Managers to ensure policies and processes in their unit are consistent with infection control standards.

4. Responsible for conducting Infection Control Risk Assessments for construction projects in collaboration with the Manager-Plant Operations.

5. Reports, as required, communicable diseases to the Health Department.

6. Maintains close liaison with public health, medical staff and case management to identify patients with infections that become apparent after discharge from the hospital.

7. Carries out periodic inspections to ensure that procedures for the prevention of infections are being followed correctly and that breaks in technique are not occurring.

8. Identifies the need for intervention in the care of patients and co-workers with infections and contacts the appropriate individuals as necessary.

9. Serves as a principal member of the Patient Safety Committee, responsible for evaluating and implementing standards of care developed by the committee.

10. Assumes responsibility for self-education by reviewing current literature, attending workshops, seminars and formal courses.

11. Responsible for collaborating with TDO to ensure co-workers and physicians have access to courses and education required.

12. Responsible for collaborating with TDO and local Administration/Managers to deliver clinical and nursing orientation.

13. Responsible for collaborating with HR to provide education during new co-worker orientation.

14. Responsible for oversight of Self-Directed competencies.

15. Responsible for taking nurse leadership call on a rotating basis with nursing managers.

16. May perform Nursing Management duties as needed on an interim basis.

17. Performs additional duties as requested by the Manager-Quality Resources and Hospital Administration.

Education: Graduate of an approved school of Nursing. Bachelor's degree in nursing or related field of study preferred.

Licensure: Current RN licensure with Missouri Board of Nursing.

Experience: Minimum three years nursing experience. Prefer experience in related fields of infection prevention or education.

Certification/Registration: Must have current CPR. Must obtain ACLS and PALS within 6 months of hire. Instructor certification(s) as appropriate.

Other: Demonstrated skill in human relations and communication is required. Must have understanding of patient care process. Must have good organizational skills, time management, and be able to coordinate large projects. Ability to work with computer database systems.
