Assistant Director Engineering

Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Assistant Director of Engineering is responsible for assisting the Director of Engineering in the planning, directing, coordinating and maintenance of all areas pertaining to the Engineering Department. The Assistant Director of Engineering is also responsible for Engineering Department in the absence of the Director of Engineering.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops and implements preventive maintenance systems and procedures and repairs all machines, equipment, apparatus and fixtures used in the Hotel in a timely fashion.
  • Informs the Director of Engineering of conditions affecting the hotel operations and the physical plant for timely repair.
  • Performs routine and emergency assignments in accordance with established hotel procedures to provide guests and employee safety.
  • Makes periodic and routine inspection tours of the hotel and monitors compliance with government requirements to ensure all applicable laws are followed.
  • Supervises and monitors the performance and daily activities of the maintenance staff, assigns jobs, work tickets and prioritize work load to ensure optimum productivity and timely response.
  • Monitors daily labor logs for completeness and accuracy of data to track and maintain labor costs.
  • Consistently provides on-the-job supervision and training
  • Provides the necessary technical information for repair, maintenance, operation, modification, replacement and new construction activities to ensure that all jobs are being done correctly.
  • Works closely with other departments to coordinate the engineering work activities including the identification of necessary repairs.
  • Performs human resources functions in accordance with established policies and procedures in terms of hiring, disciplinary actions, counseling and performance management in conjunction with the Director of Engineering to develop a highly skilled and motivated staff.
  • Advises and confers with the Director of Engineering on the effective and conservative use of heat, light and power programs and policies in order to maintain low energy costs.
  • Participates in efforts to evaluate and update administrative systems that relate to the spare parts and supplies, time and materials, inventory control, preventative maintenance, project control and work order system to provide the hotel with the most op-to-date programs and procedures.
  • Develop positive working relationship with outside vendors
  • Coordinate and schedule outside contractors
  • Attends weekly department head meetings in the absence of the Director of Engineering
  • In the absence of the Director of Engineering, plans and conducts monthly staff communication meetings to increase staff awareness, conduct monthly training and discuss quality standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 1-3 years as an Assistant Director of Engineering in a hotel or similar environment required
  • University degree or College diploma in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Technical knowledge of electrical, HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing and all areas of engineering.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills; Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time.
  • Ability to lead and direct others
  • Some computer knowledge, Microsoft, Excel etc.
  • Must carry CFC Universal Certification
  • Must carry Third Class Steam License – District of Columbia (DC)
