Facebook is looking for a policy expert with deep experience in policy debates and research around privacy and privacy legislation to join our Public Policy and Privacy team. The team's mission is to develop privacy-protective and innovative approaches to data that help bring the world closer together and improve people's lives. In this role, you'll collaborate with policy and other experts at Facebook, along with policymakers and the academic community, to help promote research into technical and policy innovations that will improve people's privacy and build the next generation of data protection legislation for people around the world. You'll build initiatives to promote thoughtful research from a range of perspectives on privacy legislation, technology, and policy.

The ideal candidate for this role has worked in published on privacy legislation and policy and has worked in academia or with privacy researchers. He or she can switch easily between big-picture conceptual thinking and detailed analysis. A successful candidate will be deeply familiar with online consumer services and be able to use his or her background and relationships to conduct and promote high-quality research and research dialogues around data protection. This role will work closely with other privacy experts in Facebook's policy team, as well as with Facebook's communications, legal, university relations, and privacy engineering groups. You should be a creative thinker with good instincts about how to drive new, practical solutions to privacy challenges, and be passionate about the services we provide and the people that we serve.

This is a full-time position based in our Washington, DC office.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop initiatives to promote high-quality academic research around regulation and technology that improves people's privacy and promotes innovation

Build collaborations with academic institutions

Represent Facebook at events and in meetings with policymakers, privacy academics, and other stakeholders

Draft and communicate publicly on research surrounding privacy protections and their implications for the next generation of global privacy legislation

Identify research and policy trends of importance to the company

Advise internal teams on developments in privacy research to help guide development of products and policies

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree

5+ years of experience conducting or supporting research around privacy and data protection issues

Experience managing and prioritizing multiple simultaneous projects

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D, JD, or advanced technical degree

Experience developing and managing academic conferences and grant programs

Experience in university-corporate partnerships

Has published on privacy legislation, technology, or regulation in an academic journal

Experience communicating publicly on privacy legislation, technology, or regulation in an academic conference
