Job Summary

The purpose of the Michigan Athletic Development team is to garner financial support to enable the Athletic Department to provide the necessary resources to all varsity teams and student-athletes.

The Associate Director of Development, West Coast Region manages and develops a portfolio of 200+ prospects and donors securing major and planned gifts of $100,000 or more on behalf of Michigan Athletics. The position will also work closely with other athletic department leaders, coaches and development colleagues in a decentralized development environment to support the priorities of the University of Michigan and its Athletic Department.

Responsibilities*

Essential Functions

Portfolio Development &Management (75%)

* Manages a portfolio of major gift prospects focusing on solicitations of $100,000 and above with mature prospects in support of current Athletic Department and University fundraising priorities.

* Develops and executes strategies to identify and qualify prospects, producing a continuous stream of donors capable of making major or planned gifts to Michigan Athletics.

* Provides proper donor stewardship through effective communication in partnership with Associate Director, Stewardship & Events.

* Possesses a comprehensive understanding of the Michigan Athletics priorities and makes a persuasive verbal and written case for supporting key programs and projects, effectively matching the interests of prospects to specific Athletics Department needs.

* Collaborates with the UM Development Community in order to successfully identify, engage and solicit prospects for major gifts, while representing the Athletic Department's values and its unique role at the University of Michigan.

* Participates in Athletic Development events including but not limited to home and away football game activities, home and away Men's Basketball games, on and off-campus donor activities, and other varsity athletic events.

Project/Liaison Work (25%)

* Acts as development liaison to select varsity sport programs to increase awareness of development priorities, support the programs fundraising needs and coordinate donor cultivation and stewardship opportunities.

* Leads and participates in special projects in support of Michigan Athletics and University of Michigan priorities.

* Serves as an expert liaison for Michigan Athletics community regarding the social, business, and philanthropic cultures within West Coast Region.

Travel

50% of time will be spent traveling. Travel will be made primarily to the West Coast Region (Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, Oregon and Washington)

Required Qualifications*

* Bachelor's degree required, Graduate or Professional degree preferred.

* Two to four years of development experience, with at least one year of lead annual or major gift experience. Experience in athletics and/or higher education preferred.

* Sound knowledge of laws, practices and philosophy of charitable giving.

* Demonstrated track record of financial development and/or sales productivity in a complex work environment.

* Excellent communication skills.

* Creative and innovative problem-solver with an entrepreneurial mindset.

* Demonstrated ability to work within a campus culture that includes a diverse array of personalities, and cohesively manage conflicting expectations.

* Available to manage 50% travel, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, when needed.

* Positive attitude with strong interpersonal skills.
