About this job

Staff Aeronautical Engineer

Job Summary:

We are a company of innovators, game changers, and entrepreneurs. As a prime contractor, we provide a broad range of communication, electronic and sensor systems used on military and commercial platforms across the globe. We embrace innovative and progressive ideas to advance our products for military and commercial customers. Electronic Systems Segment (ESS) is one of four L3 business segments, and provides a broad range of aerospace systems, security and detection systems, and pilot training.

L3 AS&T is built on the proposition that a small team of the right people can do what others will not even attempt. We specialize in developing disruptive, next-generation technologies for advanced small UASs, affordable radar systems, weapon systems, and RF sensor technologies using small company agility and big company experience. We've earned a reputation for providing vital warfighter solutions at a faster pace than traditional DoD contractors, so if you like the idea of hands-on experience designing, building, testing and fielding new technology, join us.

L3 AS&T is seeking an experienced Aeronautical Engineer with a strong background in air vehicle design. The ideal applicant for this position will have at least 7 years of experience working in a highly technical capacity as an Aeronautical Engineer. This position requires a high level of knowledge of all aspects of aircraft design, simulation, and testing, with an emphasis on small unmanned air vehicles. Aeronautical engineering should be a personal passion for you, as much as it is a career.

You will demonstrate success by:

  • Evaluate requirements and conduct trade studies to derive new air vehicle designs
  • Create aeronautical performance estimates (e.g. range/endurance, stability, etc.)
  • Specify wind tunnel performance analysis criteria, and perform data reduction on the data obtained through wind tunnel testing
  • Work closely with Guidance and Control and Mechanical Engineering teams during design processes
  • Explore new, game-changing technological integrations that may have limited prior art for reference.
  • Mentor other engineers in aeronautical design principles

Our Values are an integral part of who we are. We seek candidates who share our values:

  • Integrity
  • Excellence
  • Accountability
  • Respect

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from an accredited university is required. Attainment of Master's Degree or other advanced degree is strongly desired. A combination of experience and education will be used to evaluate applicants.

  • Significant experience in the design of air vehicles from first-principles all the way through final design

  • Experience planning, executing, and reporting pertinent results from wind tunnel tests at various flight regimes. Includes tunnel model design experience.

  • Experience using aero performance and analysis tools

  • U.S. Citizenship required

  • DoD Secret clearance (or higher) with current 5 year update required.

  • Proficiency with system design and analysis tools, such as CFD (preferably ANSYS), Matlab, and wind tunnel testing

  • The ability to perform in all aspects of Flight Sciences including requirements derivation, airframe design, aero-performance analysis, stability and control design and analysis, airfoil design and analysis, mass property allocation and tracking, and reporting of pertinent data at customer level reviews

  • The ability to determine feasibility of new requirements from an aeronautical performance perspective, and to provide feedback to customers

  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills to facilitate communications with team members, customers, and senior leadership
