Job Summary:

We are a company of innovators, game changers, and entrepreneurs. As a prime contractor, we provide a broad range of communication, electronic and sensor systems used on military and commercial platforms across the globe. We embrace innovative and progressive ideas to advance our products for military and commercial customers. Electronic Systems Segment (ESS) is one of four L3 business segments, and provides a broad range of aerospace systems, security and detection systems, and pilot training.

L3 AS&T is built on the proposition that a small team of the right people can do what others will not even attempt. We specialize in developing disruptive, next-generation technologies for advanced small UASs, affordable radar systems, weapon systems, and RF sensor technologies using small company agility and big company experience. We've earned a reputation for providing vital warfighter solutions at a faster pace than traditional DoD contractors, so if you like the idea of hands-on experience designing, building, testing and fielding new technology, join us.

This position requires expert knowledge of all aspects of aero-mechanical design, simulation, and testing, with particular expertise in flight sciences, including aerodynamics, flight mechanics, aero-propulsion systems, gas dynamics, computational fluid dynamics, materials for aerospace applications, aero-elasticity, lightweight structures and aero-mechanical control systems. A clear understanding of first principles and best practices with real-world design experience on an array of advanced aero-structures for precision guided weapons and/or Unmanned Aircraft Systems is a prerequisite.

You will demonstrate success by:

  • Perform duties expected of an Chief Aerospace Engineer - you will be part of a small group of highly experienced design experts who drive the decisions and philosophy of the engineering group as a whole, and your conduct will therefore have a strong impact on the culture of the group
  • Lead by example – people of action are the best influencers within an organization
  • Evaluate requirements and conduct trade studies to derive new air vehicle designs
  • Determine feasibility of new requirements from an aero performance perspective, and provide feedback to customers
  • Create aero performance estimates (e.g. range/endurance, stability, etc.)
  • Specify wind tunnel performance analysis criteria, and perform data reduction on the data obtained through wind tunnel testing
  • Work closely with Guidance and Control and Mechanical Engineering teams during design processes
  • Research ongoing aero technology for inclusion into current or future airframes Mentor other engineers in aerospace design principles
  • Manage Aero staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, planning and training employees. Coach, counseling, monitor, and appraise staff performance.

Our Values are an integral part of who we are. We seek candidates who share our values:

  • Integrity
  • Excellence
  • Accountability
  • Respect

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from an accredited university is required. Attainment of Master's Degree or other advanced degree is preferred. A combination of experience and education will be used to evaluate applicants, with focus on industry experience, leadership, and mentorship in relevant fields.
  • Must have at least 20 years of experience working in a highly technical capacity as an Chief Aerospace Engineer.
  • The ability to perform in all aspects of Flight Sciences including requirements derivation, airframe design, aerodynamics, flight mechanics, aero-propulsion systems, gas dynamics, computational fluid dynamics, materials for aerospace applications, aero-elasticity, lightweight structures and aero-mechanical control systems.
  • Significant experience or expertise in most of the following areas is required
  • Design of advanced airframes, including experience in the design for low observability. Design experience for subsonic, transonic and supersonic aero-structures is highly desired.
  • Propulsion system analysis and integration design, including solid rocket motors, turbojet, turbo-prop, piston, and electric systems
  • Aero-elasticity
  • Design for low Reynold's Number flight regimes
  • Design of both ground launched and air launched aero-structures
  • Strong modeling/simulation capabilities, with a record of using physical testing (wind tunnel, flight test, etc.) to validate results and further improve modeling capabilities, is required
  • Experience with processes involved in obtaining vehicle flight approvals, such as FAA certification, is a plus
  • A deep understanding of Computational Fluid Dynamics and associated toolsets is required (working knowledge of ANSYS is desired), including application of incompressible Navier-Stokes solvers
  • Proficiency with Matlab system design and analysis tools is required
  • Experience planning, executing, and reporting pertinent results from wind tunnel tests at various flight regimes is required. Includes tunnel model design experience.
  • Will require travel to support wind tunnel tests, flight tests, and off-site meetings, which will likely result in 15 travel events per year, typically less than 1 week in duration.
  • Excellent written and verbal presentation skills to facilitate communications with customers, team members, and senior leadership
