POSITION SUMMARY:

It is the responsibility of the Gardener to maintain the appearance and maintenance of horticulture interior/exterior areas of the property. All duties are to be performed in accordance with federal, state, local laws, regulations, and ordinances, as well as department and Company policies, practices, and procedures.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:

  • Mows grass, trims trees and shrubs, fertilizes lawns, plants materials, irrigates lawns, and aerates plant areas.
  • Distributes proper fertilizers, insecticides, and organic materials.
  • Removes weeds and transplants trees and plant material.
  • Periodically examines all plants for evidence of disease or insect infestation.
  • Grades and plants when necessary.
  • Installs and repairs irrigation systems, automatic timers, and valves.
  • Gathers and disposes of all debris (e.g., paper, leaves) in the work area throughout the property.
  • Performs minor service and repairs on power equipment used by the landscape department, including lubricating equipment, and adding fuel, oil, and water when needed.
  • Safely operates lifts.
  • Ensures all equipment and work areas are kept clean and clear of any safety hazards.
  • Cares for interior plant material where applicable.
  • Responds to and resolves guest complaints in a timely manner and creatively solves problems with the ability to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and resolve potential difficulties.
  • Ensures the privacy and confidentiality of guests and limits requests for information pertaining to guests in accordance with hotel policies.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in interior/exterior landscape gardening.

Preferred:

  • Bilingual abilities, English as the primary or secondary language.
  • Experience working with large equipment.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Valid Driver's License where applicable.

  • Communication: The ability to communicate information clearly and politely to coworkers, supervisors, and guests when speaking, writing, and reading English. This includes targeting the amount, style, and content of the information to the needs of the receiver.

  • Flowers, Tree and Shrubs: Knowledge of the various types of flowers, trees, and shrubs including proper installation and care methods. This includes knowledge of how to properly fertilize, water, clean beds, prune trees, maintain shrubs, and stake trees based on specific needs of flower, tree, or shrub type.
  • Irrigation: The ability to install and maintain sprinklers and irrigation systems. This includes knowledge of valves, controllers, pumps, and pumping systems.
  • Pest and Disease Control: The ability to properly and safely follow chemical and biological techniques for controlling garden pests. This includes the knowledge of techniques appropriate for various pests and plant diseases.
  • Hazardous Materials and Chemicals: The ability to handle and store hazardous materials and chemicals. This includes knowledge of the safety precautions required for each chemical.
  • Personal Protective Equipment: Knowledge of the personal protective equipment (PPE) required (e.g., ear plugs, gloves, respirators, safety glasses) for a given work activity, and correct ways to use the PPE equipment.
  • Hand Tools: The ability to properly and safely operate, maintain, repair, clean, and store hand tools and equipment (e.g., Sprayer, Round Shovel, Flat Shovel, Broom, Whisk Broom, Rake, etc.).
  • Power Tools: The ability to properly and safely operate, maintain, repair, clean, and store power tools and equipment (e.g., Chainsaw, Blower, String Trimmer, Edger, etc.).
  • Manual Dexterity: The ability to make quick, accurate, skillful, coordinated movements of one hand, one hand in coordination with its arm, or two hands to grasp, place, move, or assemble objects.
  • Physical Strength: The ability to lift, push, pull, or carry objects using hands, arms, back, stomach, shoulders, legs, or a combination of these muscle groups.
  • Stamina: The ability to exert oneself physically over long periods of time. This may include performing repetitive or strenuous tasks such as data entry or coding as well as standing and sitting for long periods.
  • Agility: The ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with the body, arms, or legs to perform job tasks.
  • Safety Orientation: The ability to work safely. This includes clearly understanding and following company safety policies and procedures, completing work in a safe manner, caring about safety of self and others, responding appropriately in an emergency, and reporting unsafe conditions.
  • Integrity and Company Policies Knowledge: The ability and willingness to uphold ethical standards and comply with all federal, state, and local laws and company policies, procedures, and regulations. This includes maintaining confidentiality of all sensitive and proprietary information and avoiding conflict of interest situations.
