Senior Specialist, Lease & License Accounting

Bethesda, MD USA

The Senior Accounting Specialist will be responsible for reviewing rent, license, and permit invoices for accuracy and propriety, verifying that they have been properly coded, and entering them into Lawson for payment. He/she will be responsible for making accrual journal entries and reconciling accounts during month-end. He/she will develop knowledge of accounting systems and assist in system testing, enhancements, and troubleshooting, as needs arise. The successful candidate should have a solid understanding of accounting principles and be both very organized and very detail oriented.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Process monthly rent and other recurring payments through Lawson Lease Management, process other miscellaneous rent expenses, and prepare the monthly rent report for review and approval.
  • Prepare Lease Verification summaries for leases and communicate with the Real Estate department and/or landlords for required adjustments.
  • Submit applications for various licenses and process renewals on timely basis.
  • Process invoices for payment within an automated environment, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, proper authorizations, and proper coding.
  • Ensure that invoice submissions are in compliance with company requirements.
  • Upload invoices from Excel spreadsheets to Lawson Accounts Payable as necessary.
  • Prepare supporting documentation in batches for review by supervisor.
  • Prepare journal entries for adjustments and month-end accruals.
  • Perform research on payments and outstanding checks, as needed.
  • Identify need and ensure required application of use-tax obligations is prepared in accordance with legal requirements.
  • Effectively communicate with vendors and review vendor statements for exceptions and omissions.
  • Reconcile various accrual accounts and prepare account reconciliations.
  • Develop knowledge-base in accounting systems and participate in system testing and enhancements.
  • Assist team members as needed to meet all department deadlines.
  • Participates in special projects as required.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Experience, Skills and Education:

  • 1-3 years of experience in accounting
  • Requires a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field or equivalent experience
  • Good basic math skills
  • Proficient in MS Excel and Word
  • Strong attention to detail; ability to key information accurately
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Good organizational skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Experience, Skills and Education:

  • Knowledge of Lawson or other automated financial systems is a plus
  • Retail/Merchandise environment experience is a plus
