Position Summary

TheScientist is responsible for applying advanced analytical methods todrive business-critical decisions at Staples. Using mathematical optimization,statistical analysis and machine learning the individual plays a key role insupporting the development of state-of-the-art solutions to complexdecision-making problems.

Theseproblems will come from all parts of the Staples Supply Chain and will includechallenges like:

• Developing andimplementing vehicle routing algorithms to optimize last mile parcel deliveryand build optimization models to support the development of an internationaltransportation network using multiple modes including Truck load, LTL and oceanfreight
• Developing demandprediction models to estimate transportation and labor capacity and buildscheduling tools to support improvements in delivery speed and customer servicewhile driving growth and increase profitability
• Building anddeploying algorithms that reduce order fulfilment costs across the Stapleswarehouse and transportation network through robotic automation, processcontrol, and capacity optimization

Qualifications

Primary Responsibilities

• Work closely withkey business partners to understand critical, complex, data-driven business andoperations challenges, and then apply analytical methods to solve them –resulting in a significant, positive impact on the Staples' bottom-line.
• Research, design,and implement data models and innovative algorithms to analyze diverse sourcesof data to realize actionable results
• Communicate results to executiveleadership

Basic Qualifications

• PhD in ComputerScience, Statistics, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Applied Physicsor related field, plus 1-3 years industry experience
• Hands-onexperience with mathematical modeling, and mathematical optimization techniquesand technologies as well as advanced machine learning, data mining, statisticalinference
• Hands-onexperience with querying databases in order to drive required analysisindependently and swiftly
• Excellent abilityto communicate complex quantitative analysis in a clear, precise, andactionable manner with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Keen attention to detail, and ability todive deep

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience developing large scale systemsusing parallel and distributed computing
• Experienceworking with development toolsets such as Spark, Hadoop, Python, C++, Java, R,H2O, Shiny, Docker, MYSQL, Teradata, NOSQL, etc.
• Experience usingdeterministic and non-deterministic mathematical programming, constraintsatisfaction, advanced supervised and unsupervised learning techniques, naturallanguage processing, robotics, markov decision process, and control theory
• Experience withvarious areas of the supply chain such as customer order, inventory, warehouse,and transportation management
• Experience with financial modelling
