DESCRIPTION:

This position's work schedule will run concurrent with the 10-month school calendar for the Sarasota County Public School System.

The person in this position functions at an advanced level of public health nursing in a large county health department. This individual works in a comprehensive school health program under the supervision of a Community Health Nursing Supervisor.

REQUIREMENTS:

Licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with F.S. 464

A Valid Florida driver's license and/or access to reliable transportation

Selected immunizations (MMWR Vol. 46/No.RR-18)

Participation in the direct deposit program within 30 days of employment as mandated per Florida Statute 110.113, 96-310, Laws of Florida

A Bachelor's degree is a minimum education requirement.

Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides and coordinates generalized school health services at assigned schools according to the local School Health Services Plan, established protocols, and supervisor's instructions.

Demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of the health needs, both physical and emotional, of school-aged youth as evidenced by the ability to deliver health promotion education, disease prevention education, and health protection services.

Ensures that no student will be admitted or attend any public or non-public school without proper documentation; performs record reviews to determine compliance with the following:

Certification of Immunization or Certificate of Immunization Exemption.

Health examination within the past twelve months for all students entering Florida schools for the first time.

Manages health care issues of students concerning actual or potential health problems which include, but are not limited to:

Nursing Assessments and triage including rapid assessment of acute physical problems.

First aid and emergency treatment.

Vision, hearing, scoliosis, and growth and development screenings.

Obesity and nutritional counseling.

Acts as liaison in communication of health-related problems (within the limits of client confidentiality) between parents and students (including home visits as needed) to form a collaborative effort to meet the needs of the child.

Provides health education to families, assists indigent families in obtaining health care for students, and refers for services when appropriate.

Ensures that a school health record is established for each student and that the record includes documentation of identified health problems and corrective measures taken. Completes a separate professional treatment record to be used to document the provision of confidential health services by health care professional and paraprofessionals.

Assists in identification of high-risk students with medical issues requiring assistance and possible emergency intervention in the school setting (including pregnancy). Individual nursing care plans, including emergency, will be initiated and shared with all appropriate staff.

Acts as a resource person/nursing consultant (within the limits of DOH-Sarasota policies) and provides health information for health room aides, teachers, and other school staff. Participates as a member of the school study team and school assistance team to facilitate student referrals for service.

Assists in developing a procedure for administration of medications during school hours. Ensures those medical services (invasive procedures) are provided by appropriately trained individuals. Monitors staff designated by the principal to administer medications. Provides education as needed to students who, with parent and physician permission, self-administer medications. Takes and implements physician orders via telephone as required.

Assists with, and monitors health room compliance with, an emergency/disaster plan for the school setting.

Manages and coordinates special projects related to School Health as outlined in the local School Health Services Plan, established protocols, and supervisor's instructions.

Provides age-appropriate nursing counseling on topics including but not limited to:

Substance abuse (drug and alcohol) education and treatment referral.

Smoking cessation.

Domestic violence prevention.

Communicable disease prevention including sexually transmitted disease.

Pregnancy prevention.

Violence prevention, identification of bullying behavior.

Suicide prevention with appropriate intervention referrals.

Life-style issues with elimination of risk-taking behaviors.

Identification of health issues, need for early intervention, and ability to be own "health advocates".

When working with middle/high school youth, provides a teen-friendly approach to student's medical and emotional needs while advising in a professional and organized manner.

Collaborates with school and community support services in order to facilitate the oversight of student health and improve the health outcomes of students:

Serves as member of appropriate community and school committees.

Coordinates with Healthy Start to ensure timely and adequate provision of services to pregnant students.

Coordinates or provides work-site wellness programs that promote a healthy physical and psychosocial school climate.

Performs other related duties as assigned per supervisor's instructions with adjustable scheduling.

Participates in SCHD clinics as assigned.

Attends and participates in staff development and in-service education programs.

Maintains current CPR certification for health professionals.

Follows DOH rules and regulations and departmental policies and procedures.

If certified as an advanced practice school nurse, will perform functions in an expanded role. Will renew and maintain an educational certificate according to certification standards.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES ESSENTIAL TO THE ROLE:

Ability to organize, prioritize & schedule

Skills in nursing process

Ability to make visits/meetings outside the school setting as scheduled

Ability to operate various machines and equipment such as computers, copiers, fax machines, etc.
