POSITION TITLE:              PLANT MANAGER

REPORTS TO:                     GM/VICE PRESIDENT

 

SUMMARY

Directs production, distribution, maintenance, receiving, and supervision operations for the Plant, by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors. Oversee performance of shift supervisors, and plant operations, with a total of five locations.  Communicate company standards to staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leads all departments in the plant with department supervisors (or production manager) to maintain safety, quality, and efficient production.
  • Coordinates production, distribution, and warehousing in accordance with policies, principles, and established procedures.
  • Develops and implements plans for efficient use of materials, machines, and employees.
  • Reviews production costs and product quality, and modifies production and inventory control programs to maintain and enhance profitable operation of plant.
  • Directs preparation of production, human resources and labor/costs records.
  • Recommends budgets to management.
  • Assists management in negotiation of employee contracts.
  • Maintains positive working relationship with sales management and customer service management.
  • Systematically reviews financial performance of the plant to recommend to management opportunities for sales growth and cost savings.
  • Coordinates plant safety, environmental and training activities in cooperation with the Human Resources Department.
  • Comply with company policies and procedures.
  • Additional duties as assigned by management.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Manages subordinate supervisors and/or production manager who supervise all plant employees.  Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED plus college and/or appropriate technical courses

Five years experience as a proven manager

Ten years corrugated manufacturing experience

Candidates are PREFERRED who offer the following:

College degree

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyzes, and interprets general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

TECHNICAL SKILLS

The individual must have a working knowledge of the following:

Equipment design and capabilities that can be translated into efficient operation.  This also supports the supervisor's role of teacher and trainer for his/her personnel.

Cost issues in order to make daily decisions that will reduce overall costs and will help the supervisor find areas that require improvement.

Budget development, adherence and analysis.

Quality standards.

Regulatory requirements including but not limited to wage and hour requirements, environmental and waste minimization, company policies, and personnel requirements including OSHA, DEQ and EEO.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and sit.  The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts.  The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.  The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; and vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Professional appearance to support his/her role as a managerial representative of the company.

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS

The performance of the supervisor will be measured as follows:

Operating standards - the Plant Manager will need to see that all reporting staff meet or exceed the Operating Standards in the areas of quality, cost, safety, customer satisfaction and productivity.  Such standards will be set annually and communicated to the supervisor.

Personal growth - while the company will provide the tools to assist the supervisor to grow professionally the responsibility for moving forward lies with the individual.  Each year there will be goals developed and agreed to by the supervisor and his/her superior.

Employee relations - through observations the Plant Manager will be evaluated regarding his/her and his/her reporting staff's skills and advancements in the areas of motivational techniques and results, positive and corrective/constructive feedback, and subordinate development and creating a positive work environment.

Creativity - this will be evaluated by how active the Plant Manager and his/her direct reports are in participating in advancing the business through new and innovative ideas.
