Provides for the care and safety of the surgical patient prior to, during and after surgery. Assures sterile surgical field and equipment, prior to and during surgical procedure. Assures proper handling and disposal of instruments, linens and paper products after surgical procedures. Key Responsibilities/Performance Standards Demonstrates competency in the scrub role. a. Demonstrates at all times knowledge and skill in applying principles of aseptic and sterile techniques to insure infection control. No known infections resulting from employee error. b. Demonstrates knowledge of surgical anatomy and physiology and wound healing, as these factors relate to surgical procedures. c. Assists surgeons with scope of training with surgeries. d. Before, during and after surgery continuously monitors patient to help insure against injury.   Ability to anticipate and comprehend risk factors and potential intra--operative complications and knowledge of action to minimize them. a. Ability to remain flexible and to respond to varying conditions. b. Takes action when appropriate to limit complications. c. Checks all equipment and instruments to assure proper function.  Reports any discrepancies promptly c. Works closely with Ortho Manager and nurses to maintain supplies and equipment. d. Ability to work as a team player. e. Communicate with co-workers in a manner which demonstrates forward planning and progression of procedures. f. Show respect and consideration to all staff. g. Ability to recognize stressful situations and acts accordingly in demeanor and actions.   Keen sense of responsibility and a concern for accuracy in performing all duties. a. Performs counts with RN per O.R. policy. b. Performs surgical scrub responsibilities per O.R. policy. c. Demonstrates proper handling of surgical specimens. d. Reads pack for correct implant, size, and expiration date to RN/Surgeon   Checks all medications with RN prior to use on surgical procedures. a. No patients are harmed due to Surgical Technician failing to read or understand use of medication. b. Demonstrates ability to take pre-cautions or respond immediately to patient allergies. c. No drugs on sterile field not labeled. d. Insures all medications on sterile field are labeled with drug name, expiration date and initials.   Utilizes aseptic technique and infection control principles. a. Knows and demonstrates standard precautions in maintaining aseptic technique. b. Follows physician's order for surgical prep. c. Performs specific tasks to turnover OR suite in timely fashion. d. Ensures that policies are always followed regarding aseptic technique and infection control.   Maintains assigned work area in a clean and orderly condition. a. Checks OR suites to ensure equipment, instrumentation and supplies are available to perform duties. b. Removes soiled linen and supplies to assist in turnover of OR suite. c. Assist with cleaning OR suites as needed. d. Sets up instruments and supplies as relates to specific procedure and physician preference cards.   Follows safety guidelines and maintains patient privacy and teaches others the same. a. Ensures patient privacy.   Reports pertinent information to Manager and doctors. a. Knows unusual circumstances and reports same.   Teaches, guides, assists and acts as a resource person for new employees/students and team member. a. Provides new employees with accurate and clear information and instructions. b. Contribute to Team building and utilize skills to determine efficiency improvements in OR suites. c. Acts as resource person for a Ortho specialty service. d. Assist with training surgical technician students e. Responds to pages from Manager, other UOS staff and front office in a timely fashion   Furthers education. a. Attends monthly Ortho OR staff meetings. b. Attends special educational seminars and meetings.   Education: One year certified from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze and interpret medical/business periodicals, professional journals. Ability to write reports and correspondence. Ability to present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, etc. Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collects data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Licensure, Certification, Registration: Graduate from accredited school; certification preferred.
