Medical Assistant Position Summary: The purpose of this position is to provide direct healthcare services to patients across age continuum from birth to elderly in a multi-specialty family practice environment. The incumbent will perform basic patient care services and technical tasks. Scope of Work: This position serves in an ambulatory care setting and may be organizationally located and duty stationed at any one of the Tohono O'odham Nation Sells Hospital facilities located in Sells, AZ, Santa Rosa, AZ, San Simon, AZ, or Tucson, AZ. The incumbent receives administrative direction from the Supervisory Clinical Nurse, or the Lead Nurse of the area to which assigned. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Performs intake procedures by obtaining chief compliant, purpose of visit, vital signs, pulse oximetry, height-, weight; routing patients and labeling specimens, etc. Assists the RN, LPN and MD by promptly reporting changes in the patient's condition. Initiates emergency measure, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), appropriate to skill level, assist with retrieving emergency medical equipment. Assists health providers in examination of patients by; explaining procedures, positioning the patient; assembling, arranging and draping instruments; and gathering supplies. Obtains bacteriologic specimens such as sputum and clean-catch urine specimens. Instructs patients in proper collection of samples. Prepares samples for analysis e.g. labels specimen tubes. Routes requisition forms to laboratory and x-ray as needed. Files results of various tests in the patient's medical record. Assist with escorting/transporting patient to various hospital departments (i.e. laboratory, radiology). Instruct patients on patient's role in various procedures and assists with chaperoned examinations. Reinforces patient teaching given by the professional nurse, licensed practical nurse and medical staff. Documents information/patient care on to the patient's PCC Ambulatory Care Record and/or electronic health record (EHR). Performs less complex dressings and treatments without assistance. Assists with cleaning, irrigating, and dressing complex wounds. Performs skin care measures. Assist in inhalation therapy-obtains Peak Expiratory Flow Rates and sets-up small volume nebulizers. Performs urinary catheterization. Performs 12 Lead EKG and gives report to RN/MD. Performs venipuncture for blood draws, within the MA's scope of practice. Performs blood glucose testing and records results using a glucometer. Perform other waived tests as indicated by laboratory policy. Complies with laboratory requirements for glucometer accuracy and record keeping. Reports to RN or MD and documents finding in medical records. Performs hearing and vision screening. Applies various orthopedic soft goods and splints necessary for the treatment of various orthopedic injuries. Administers oral medications, performs subcutaneous and intramuscular injections. Maintains a clean and safe work environment by preparing examination rooms and tables. Obtains medical records and screens charts for possible implementation of other necessary forms that may be required with the patient's visit. Checks and restocks examination areas/room after each use and at the end of each shift. Maintains inventory of supplies ordered and received. Maintains a courteous and professional manner when in contact with patients, family, and other customers. Answers the phone and provides routine information. Assist with making patient appointment and scheduling. Attends and completes all mandatory training per hospital policy. Participates in the continuous Performance Improvement Program. Assists in orientation of new personnel. Adheres to Privacy Act regulations, HIPAA and maintains patient confidentiality. Contributes to a team effort. Performs other job related duties as assigned.   Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions. Knowledge and skill sufficient to use standard equipment, materials, and supplies in diagnostic and treatment procedures that support patient care. Ability to perform a variety of clinical skills such as obtaining vital signs, administer immunizations, injections for skin test, draw blood, run laboratory tests, perform EKGs, remove sutures, and assist with minor surgical procedures. Knowledge of medical terminology and procedures common to the multi-disciplinary service in order to record and report tests and radiological results. An understanding of disease processes and illness and interpersonal communication skill sufficient to teach patients and self-care. Must be able to deal with life-threatening emergency situations such as a cardiac arrest independently. Must be able to work effectively under mental and emotional pressure of emergency situations. Knowledge of the procurement system established and the methods used to supply the Ambulatory Care Department. Knowledge and understanding of the cultural needs of the patient. May need to interpret for Tohono O'odham or Hispanic patients on the treatment procedure to be performed. Knowledge and understanding of safety and infection control standards, performance improvement and accreditation standards. Thorough knowledge of the Privacy Act of 1974 which mandates the incumbent to maintain confidentiality of all administrative, medical and personnel records. Knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, Public Law 104-191 (HIPAA). Computer skills are essential to utilize and document in the Electronic Health Record.  Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or General Education Diploma. Completion of an approved medical assistant training program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), or by any accrediting agency recognized by the United States Department of Education. Please provide a copy of your official transcripts and diploma, OR; A current and active Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from The American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or the American Medical Technologists (AMT). Please provide a copy of your certification with your application, OR; Completion of a medical services training program of the Armed Forces of the United States. Please provide a copy of an official record that verifies the training received. Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements: Must have current certification in Healthcare Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Upon recommendation for hire a criminal background and National FBI fingerprint check is required to determine suitability for hire. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years). Must submit a 39-month driving record with the employment application. Must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles. Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English as a condition of employment. Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit; walk; use hands, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. Work requires long periods of standing, walking, bending, stretching and lifting. Lifting and/or moving involves up to 50 pounds, and with assistance or assistive devices may lift/move up to 100 pounds. Incumbent may be required to work flexible or overtime hours to maintain patient care. In the clinic environment there is common potential exposure to contagious diseases, blood borne pathogens, contaminated body fluids and some exposure to x-ray radiation. Personal protective equipment and guidelines to prevent disease are provided. Some degree of risk is present in working with emotionally disturbed and/or inebriated individuals.
