Overview

PRIMARY FUNCTION AND RELATIONSHIP TO TOTAL ORGANIZATION:

The Laboratory Support Technician (LST) processes laboratory specimens for testing, evaluates specimen acceptability, enters patient and test information into the computer, and responds to requests for information from customers. This position serves in the Laboratory's main communication and customer relations center. The employee monitors test requests in the order/entry system. This position contributes directly to patient care by accurately and timely processing specimens and dispersing information both in and outside the Laboratory.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

* Registers, orders and accessions specimens utilizing the laboratory and hospital information systems by entering and/or verifying patient information. Matches requested tests to Laboratory-offered tests. Follows all UnityPoint Health -- Des Moines policies regarding Medicare and Coding compliance. Prioritizes specimens and relays special requests, and all additional information. (C)

* Collects and processes specimens by collecting, labeling, centrifuging, organizing by Laboratory section(s), aliquoting, and storing. Prepares specimens for transport according to Department of Transportation (DOT) and International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulations.(F)

* Assesses specimen acceptability for specimen type, volume, time past collection, duplication, and appropriate collection guidelines; and appropriately cancels accessions due to misordering, unacceptable specimens, uncollected work, or by request of other healthcare employees. (F)

* Provides information concerning specimen collection, patient results, interface ordering, normal values, Laboratory operation, and phlebotomy; and monitors interface orders to ensure specimen collection. (F)

* Resolves problems or refers problems dealing with Laboratory testing and/or operations. (O)

* Supports, participates in and complies to LEAN work and productivity standards. (C)

* Correctly performs testing, quality control (QC), and maintenance for POCT/Waived testing and documentation, as directed. (C)

* Instructs, trains, and evaluates students and new employees. (O)

OTHER FUNCTIONS: The following are performed on an as needed basis:

* This position may be assigned a specific mission to address in an emergency situation to assist in disaster response and recovery as part of the UnityPoint Health -- Des Moines Hospital Emergency Incident Command System (HEICS). Situations of a critical nature may require an individual to perform multiple tasks until additional support can be obtained.

* Performs functions other than described due to extenuating circumstances.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

High school graduate or equivalent. Training as a unit clerk, medical assistant, medical secretary, or phlebotomist is preferred. Coursework in biology and/or chemistry is considered. Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English.

EXPERIENCE:

No experience is required. Previous employment in a medical setting, in computer operations, and/or with telephone demands is preferred.
