The Physical Therapy Department of the School of Health Professions at Hunter College of the City University of New York (CUNY) is conducting a search for a Department Chair. Applicants should currently hold Associate Professor or Professor rank within a physical therapy program. We have a dynamic academic / clinical / research program which has graduated highly qualified and respected Doctors of Physical Therapy for over 45 years. The current Chair is retiring after serving for over 25 years. The facilities have been completely renovated with all new teaching and research equipment. We have research collaborations with various NYC institutions, which have resulted in multiple peer-reviewed publications and/or presentations at national conferences. The Hunter College Department of Physical Therapy shares the Brookdale campus with the Department of Speech Language and Audiology and the School of Nursing. Hunter College collaborates with the NY Simulation Center for the Health Sciences to provide unique learning experiences for our students. Plans include relocating to a new Health and Science building on the upper east side of Manhattan. The Department enjoys strong support from all levels of administration. The Chair has access to various streams of financial support, facilitating an enhanced environment for the faculty and students. The DPT program is CAPTE accredited through 2026. Job Purpose and Summary: Administer all affairs of the Department. Arrange schedules of classes and assigns faculty to their teaching, student advising, and other responsibilities. Oversee all aspects of the day-to-day operation of the program, the welfare of the faculty, staff and students, and the health and safety of all users of the area. Prepare lists of budgetary and other needs. Interviewand selects applicants for adjunct teaching positions in collaboration with full-time faculty. Perform other administrative duties in addition to teaching assignment. The Chair should advise the administration of all departmental needs. The Department Chair should develop a good rapport with faculty and students and maintain an open and fair attitude. Contacts with alumni and organizations employing program graduates should be maintained. The Department Chair should provide visibility and vitality for the Department and College through involvement in professional service at the local, regional and national levels, support of research by faculty, student recruitment and service on college wide committees. The Department Chair should demonstrate respect by providing quality and responsible leadership, quality teaching, research and service, by making fair, equitable and defensible decisions, by openly discussing issues, by supporting faculty in the pursuit of achieving their full potential, and by being available for student counseling and advisement. The varied demands of the assignment necessitate that the Department Chair should have versatile abilities and strengths. An ideal Department Chair is a leader with effective communication and listening skills, who is innovative, creative and open to new ideas; fair, objective and impartial; compassionate and sensitive; respected as an accomplished teacher/scholar; and, willing to meet the time requirements of the position.
