REQUIREMENTS

The duties and responsibilities of this position include those functions and tasks of an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner in the Family planning /STD clinic including examination, diagnosis, and treatment of clients within the scope of licensure and under the general supervision of the Medical Director and within the guidelines of established protocols. Clinical skills include the ability to perform physical exams, diagnose and treat sexually transmitted diseases and gynecologic problems, and counsel clients on appropriate contraceptive methods. Abilities include placement and removal of LARCs and other forms of birth control. Colposcopy skills are desired but not required.

Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.

Must have a current Florida Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner License. Family Planning/STD experience preferred. Experience counseling clients on various methods of contraception preferred. Colposcopy experience preferred. Mobile Health Unit experience preferred.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

This position provides advanced and specialized nursing care in the clinics of the Marion County Health Department. This nursing position must be licensed with the State of Florida as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner. Position works under the general supervision of the Medical Director, within the guidelines of protocols established.

Identifies the purpose of the client's visit, reviews the current health history and documents data on the correct forms. Examines the client and documents the physical findings on the appropriate forms and in accordance with medical protocols. Establishes presumptive medical diagnosis. Plans and initiates treatment and seeks medical supervision in accordance with medical protocols. Monitors and coordinates referrals for abnormal findings. Documentation is complete and accurate; reflects services provided. Prepares reports related to personal health programs. Utilizes EHR.

Provides direct patient care of family planning, sexually transmitted disease refugee health and communicable disease clients (both male and female) for health maintenance by performing a complete screening physical examination techniques with specific emphasis on evaluation of breast, abdomen and pelvis with visualization of the cervix. Obtains papanicolaou smear and cervical culture and performs bi-manual vaginal and rectovaginal examinations.

Within established protocols, monitors medications and initiates appropriate therapies for certain conditions and alters medications according to variations in a patient's response. Fits patients for diaphragms; inserts/removes intra-uterine devices; manages patients on oral contraceptive; injectable and transdermal contraceptives, performs colposcopy and cryotherapy, if certified; inserts/removes implanon if trained.

Performs, orders and interprets routine laboratory tests such as urinalysis, blood counts, pregnancy test, smears and cultures. Assures follow up of abnormal test results. Provides health education and counseling for patients, including the psychosocial dimensions in the area of nutrition, sexuality, childbearing, parenting and family life. Arranges referrals as needed to other members of the heath care team.

Prepares reports related to personal health programs. Reviews and approves content of client education programs. Promotes health education within the clinic area. Participates in Quality Improvement activities. Maintains membership in professional organizations, participates in meeting and workshop seminars. Provides direct and general supervision as a preceptor to nurse practitioner students.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge to initiate appropriate therapies for certain conditions. Knowledge to order and interpret diagnostic tests and physical and occupational therapy. Knowledge to manage selected medical problems, as specified in protocols. Knowledge to initiate, monitor or alter therapies for certain uncomplicated acute illnesses. Knowledge to monitor and manage patients with stable chronic diseases.
