The Vice President, Technical Accounting & Transaction Support is responsible for providing accounting thought leadership to the company.  The Vice President, Technical Accounting & Transaction Support leads a team of professionals responsible for providing executive decision support, expert consultation and thought leadership on business transactions by identifying and addressing accounting and reporting policy issues and opportunities.   The Vice President, Technical Accounting & Transaction Support has frequent interaction with members of executive management in fulfilling these responsibilities. 
 
This person must be adept at tapping diverse sources of information, identifying profitable opportunities, anticipating challenges, and devising and executing breakthrough strategies to deliver against current and future business priorities, thereby strengthening Marriott’s competitive advantage through excellence in financial management.
 
EXPECTED CONTRIBUTIONS
  • Lead the thought leadership associated with providing proactive, expert consultation, and technical support on business transactions (e.g., mergers and acquisitions, dispositions, asset sales and leases, joint venture structuring) by identifying and addressing accounting policy and reporting issues and opportunities (e.g., lead financial accounting due diligence efforts;  apply complex accounting and reporting concepts to deal structures such that they minimize risk and maximize return for the enterprise). 
  • Provide thought leadership in developing complex financial structures for business transactions.
  • Establish and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with executive management, Global Finance partners, Legal and other internal stakeholder groups to understand the business and ensure timely and accurate exchange of information. 
  • Lead accounting literature research and apply technical standards to complex business issues and transactions.  Lead research and preparation of policy memos documenting Marriott’s conclusions.
  • Lead and manage the group responsible for the preparation of the earnings per share, return on capital, and investment capacity analyses for potential transactions.  Ensure that the analyses reflect the appropriate accounting treatment under generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Stay abreast of existing and emerging financial accounting and reporting principles, assessing their applicability to Marriott and proactively advising executive management, members of Global Finance and other stakeholder groups as needed depending upon the significance of the issues to Marriott.
  • Contribute to the development of discipline and enterprise policies that facilitate a strong internal control environment.
  • Lead, develop, and mentor team members and encourage collaboration and a positive and productive environment within the Accounting Policy group. Set goals and expectations for direct reports using the Leadership Performance Process (LPP) and hold staff accountable for successful performance; coach team by providing specific feedback to improve performance; conduct annual performance appraisal with direct reports; and ensure the same occurs at lower levels of his/her organization. Partner with Human Resources to strengthen the organization performance by ensuring effective structures, processes, jobs, and tools are in place for associates to do their jobs effectively.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to meet business needs.
 
CANDIDATE PROFILE
Experience
  • Fifteen years professional accounting experience to include public accounting experience at the senior manager or partner level, significant National Office or SEC fellowship experience strongly preferred.
  • Seven years in a management role; demonstrated success leading and developing a strong team in a complex, service-intensive, deadline-driven environment.
  • Experience analyzing and recommending appropriate strategies addressing technical accounting issues of complex real estate, joint venture, merger & acquisition, disposition and tax transactions. Experience with highly complex business arrangements strongly preferred.
  • Mergers and acquisitions experience strongly preferred.
  • Lodging/hospitality industry experience strongly preferred.
  • History of consistently delivering business results.
     
    Education or Certification
  • Baccalaureate degree in Accounting, Finance or related discipline required
  • CPA required
  • MBA or Master’s of Science Degree in Accounting, Finance or related discipline strongly preferred
