POSITION PURPOSE

Under general supervision, provides primary healthcare and performs approved medical services under the direction of a clinic physician. Adheres to the principles of Service Excellence Guiding Behaviors and the philosophy and mission of Mercy in all aspects of job performance.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES:

1.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide service/care appropriate to the age of the patients served, in accordance with Mercy standards.

2.

Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations, the Organizational Integrity Program, Code of Ethics, as well as other policies and procedures.

3.

Performs health screening of clinic patients within the scope of medical ability.

4.

Provides direct patient care as defined by state licensure requirements.

5.

Performs patient physical exam, elicit medical history, record findings on progress notes, prepare and dictate discharge summaries for the physician-employer.

6.

Assesses, diagnoses, and treats medical and surgical problems and records the same for review by the supervising physician.

7.

Performs therapeutic procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing, removal of foreign bodies, aspirations and other clinical procedures.

8.

Provides prenatal, postnatal, and obstetrical care as directed by the supervising physician.

9.

Performs office surgical procedures such as skin biopsy, ingrown toenail removal, incision and drainage of abscesses, arthrocentesis and mole removal.

10.

Cares for orthopedic problems such as strains, sprained dislocations and simple fractures.

11.

Performs and/or screens special medical tests such as electrocardiography, cardiac monitoring, radiography, audiometric and vision screening, tonometry, lumbar puncture, and pulmonary function tests.

12.

Instructs and counsels patients regarding physical and mental health on matters such as diets, disease, therapy, normal growth and development.

13.

Assists the supervising physician in the delivery of services to patients requiring continuing care in home, nursing facility or hospital.

14.

Refers patient to appropriate specialist as directed by supervising physician.

15.

Maintains awareness of community services, agencies, resources and health facilities.

16.

Assists in ordering and maintaining equipment, medications, and records of the practice.

17.

Provides immediate evaluation, treatment and institution of procedures essential to providing appropriate response to emergency medical problems. Prompt response requires pre-approved plan as per supervising physician.

18.

Admits patient to hospital or health care facility as directed by the supervising physician.

19.

Orders laboratory testing, radiographic procedures, diets, and inhalation therapy. Orders physical, occupational, or speech therapy and rehabilitation as patient condition warrants.

20.

Supplies properly packaged and labeled prescription drugs and/or controlled substances to the patient when pharmacy services are not reasonably available or when it is in the best interest of the patient, as directed by the supervising physician.

21.

Administers and/or orders medications within the guidelines established by state licensure agency.

22.

May, at the request of a proper authority, withdraw a specimen of blood from a patient for the purpose of determining blood alcohol or drug level (other medicolegal).

23.

Directs other medical personnel in the provision and execution of patient care.

24.

Participates with the Physician and other staff in the development, execution and periodic review of the written policies governing the services the clinic furnishes.

25.

Directs and assists emergency personnel in the stabilization and transport of critically ill patients.

26.

Assists the supervising physician in the hospital setting (where allowed) in providing patient care inclusive of, but not limited to:

a. Performing histories and physicals.

b. Making patient rounds and recording progress notes.

c. Assisting in surgery and other medical procedures.

d. Providing emergency medical services.

Transmitting and executing standing orders. Ordering appropriate tests, medications and therapy as directed by the supervising physician. Dictating discharge summaries and admitting H & P. Performing urinary bladder catheterization, arterial and

venous puncture, intravenous catheterization, passage of NG tube and gastric lavage.

Participates with the Sponsoring Physician in developing clinic protocols.

28.

Participates in the development and administration of patient education programs.

29.

Actively participates in department meetings, committees, conferences, and in services.

30.

Maintains confidentiality of information pertaining to clients, physicians, employees, and Mercy business.

31.

Is knowledgeable of and actively participates in improving patient safety and reducing risk to patients. Complies with Safety and Infection Control & Procedure.

32.

Employee may periodically be requested to drive.

33.

Demonstrates general working knowledge of computers and department specific software (i.e. word, excel, bed tracking, internet, med aide, etc.)

34.

Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

National certification and current license in state (Iowa/Nebraska) to practice as a Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner. A minimum of one year of experience as a general Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner in a primary care setting preferred. Is able to communicate effectively with all members of the health care team. Is able to perform a variety of duties characterized by frequent change. Must have a general working knowledge of computers and department specific software (i.e. Healthstream, internet, etc.) May be requested to travel within the Siouxland region. When assigned to travel, a valid drivers license and proof of insurance will be submitted to manager prior to travel. Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment. Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals, and values of Mercy and Trinity Health.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Must successfully pass employment physical examination and must adhere to applicable organizational requirements on an annual basis for Employee Health Directives. Must possess the ability to comply with Mercy and Trinity Health policies and procedures. Primarily works inside with frequent sitting, walking, standing and occasional lifting of patients in excess of 50 pounds. Able to perform effectively under stressful situations. Must understand and accept the possibility of exposure to environmental elements, such as inclement weather, dust, noise, chemicals and/or chemical fumes, and infectious disease.
