* Design and implement education programs to meet practice standards

* Work collaboratively with the Quality Improvement/Quality Assurance staff to meet the educational goals and objectives of the department thus provide high quality patient care in compliance with all department policies and quality measures.

* Maintain current knowledge of Joint Commission Standards, AORN Standards, and all state and federal regulations required by law.

* Establishes a collaborative/consultative relationship with other health professionals and administrative personnel

* Continuously plans, implements, assesses and evaluates staff and student education programs, professional development and learning experiences

* Demonstrates expert level clinical practice by maintaining clinical competency at all times including but not limited to scrubbing and circulating.

* Works collaboratively with leadership team by maintaining knowledge for specific staffing needs for individual services

* Work with service leads, educators, charge nurses, and managers in the individual services to maintain clinical and professional competencies

* Design and participate in the production of self-instruction and multi-media education programs such as Mlearning

* Promote the integration of research and evidence based practice findings into clinical practice for the surgical setting

* Actively participates in a professional organization: such as AORN

* Actively works toward the UMHS Framework level of Role Specific Advancement toward Mastery Education Nurse Coordinator.

* Works collaboratively with preceptors to educate new hires and develop a teaching plan based on the individual learner.

Supervision Received from: Direction is received from the Perioperative Education Specialist Supervisor and the CVC OR/PACU Clinical Nursing Director.

Supervision Exercised: Functional supervision may be exercised over Registered Nurses Level A - E, LPN's, Allied Health, Service/Maintenance and other support staff.

ENC- COMPETENT.

Actual RSAM LEVEL and salary will be determined at time of hire.

RSAM levels range from ENC-COMPETENT to ENC-EXPERT TO ENC-MASTERY.

Required qualifications must be met by the candidate in order to be interviewed and considered for the position. Posting may be filled after the initial 5-day posting period.

Required Qualifications*

* A Bachelor's degree in Nursing or an equivalent combination of education and experience in cardiac surgery is necessary.

* Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan is required.

* Minimum of three to five years of current perioperative nursing practice in cardiac surgery.

* Consistent application of competency-based approach to nursing theory and practice following UMHS OR Nursing, Elsevier, and UMHS Policies and Guidelines.

* Understands the theory based approach to Perioperative nursing using AORN Standards and Practices Guidelines.

* Able to utilize electronic learning management systems to carry out and schedule educational programs such as Mlearning.

* Demonstrates proficient computer skills including in Microsoft Office, Qualtrics or Survey Monkey, and Outlook.

* Able to demonstrate and understand the principles of learning with novice to expert staff at all levels using the three domains of learning (cognitive, psychomotor, and affective)

* Demonstrates exemplary communication skills- written, verbal, and non-verbal.

* Demonstrates in depth knowledge of perioperative nursing skills for cardiac, vascular and thoracic surgery.

* Demonstrates expert skill level in scrubbing and circulating all cardiac, vascular and thoracic surgery procedures and related interventional cardiovascular procedures.

* Act as a positive and professional role model while teaching, coaching, and mentoring.

* Demonstrates critical thinking skills and professionalism in the Perioperative area.

* Previous teaching or precepting experience in a cardiovascular unit/OR.

* Demonstrates and promotes a culture of following UMHS Policies and Guidelines

* Demonstrates the skills, knowledge, and the ability to develop professionalism within the unit by effective team work, positive attitude, enthusiasm and leadership skills

* Willing to participate and learn a variety of teaching and training modalities including procedure simulation.

* Demonstrates ability to collaborate with other healthcare professionals (physicians, nurses, perfusionists, etc.) in building teaching models for a multi-disciplined patient care setting.

Desired Qualifications*

* MSN or MS Degree or currently enrolled in a MSN or MS Degree Program

* CNOR certification desired; plans to obtain the CNOR within 6 months of hire/transfer date

* Highly accountable for self-development and teamwork in education role

* Participates in unit Professional Practice Model

* Experience in computer based teaching modules in the area of Perioperative nursing (AORN Periop 101)

* Experience in classroom and clinical teaching of new hires specifically RN interns, experienced OR RNs, STs, PTs, and student externships for orientation

* Experience in teaching adult learners with in the community setting.

Work Schedule

Hours: 40 hours per week,

Shift: Day Shift, Flex shift times as needed for learners (5 days per week/8-hr day)

Location: Cardiovascular Center Operating Room
