The Senior Director, Apparel Design is responsible for managing and directing a given apparel design division. The incumbent will provide direction to all design staff members in all aspects of the design process. The Director will be involved in the development of apparel goals and drive implementation based on the future business strategy. Partners with merchants, sourcing managers, and product development leadership on key business decisions. This individual will play a key role in building strong functional relationships with these key business partners.

  • Leverages top-down direction to set the overall strategy and design direction for the division.
  • Provides overall recommendations and sets tone regarding style and fit of product during presentation.
  • Identifies the support needed for each division and the workload involved; Organizes staff and structure to meet the needs of the business
  • Ensures communication between design team and business partners ie: tech design, merchant teams and sourcing.
  • Identifies and executes opportunities for process improvement through subordinate staff members
  • Ensures that design team has full knowledge of the Customer through store visits and communication with the field and merchants
  • Maintains accountability for staff hiring, orientation, training, performance evaluations and development of associates.
  • Manages staff in all aspects of entire product design process to include market research, mood board creation, fabric development, designing, sketching, 'specing' and fit.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • College degree in Fashion Design or related field
  • 10-15+ years design experience
  • Expert design and conceptual skills
  • Ability to set a creative tone and to inspire ideas/new concepts; ability to conceptually visualize and build a line for multiple brands
  • Ability to articulate print/pattern direction by brand and direct apparel and textile designers through trend, color and assortment
  • Indepth knowledge of Women's RTW and Juniors markets
  • Excellent organizational, time management, communication and presentation skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of silhouettes, fabrication, color ways, sewing techniques, graphics and trims
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Experience managing design teams, calendars and process
  • Ability and experience in forming strong relationships with internal and external partners
