Responsibilities and Qualifications

Responsible for providing optimum nutritional care to patients through assessing nutritional needs; developing, implementing, and re-evaluating nutritional care plans; and counseling and educating patients and families. Responsible for the overall management of Nutrition Services to assure that quality nutritional care is provided to patients, guests, and co-workers in a cost-effective manner. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.

Performs nutritional assessments on patients to determine nutritional status and level of care needed. Provides nutrition education to the patient, family, or caregiver within 24-72 hours of referral. Demonstrates knowledge of special needs and behaviors of specific age groups to include pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric. Discusses patient nutrition care plan, needs, problems and progress with other members of the health care team. Provides nutrition training and supervision for dietetic students/interns. Maintains state licensure and Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics registration. Participates in continuing education seminars and lectures. Performs other related duties as required. Oversees Nutrition Services operations in production, cafeteria, and catering. 9. Responsible for directly and indirectly supervising Nutrition Services Supervisor and co-workers

Continuously assesses and improves department performance levels through the quality control process

Performs nutritional assessments on patients to determine nutritional status and level of care needed. 1.1 Assesses patients with in 24-72 hours of notification of nutrition consult by nursing identified by nutrition screening which is performed by nursing within 24 hours of admit. 1.2 Assesses patients on enteral and parenteral nutrition within 24-72 hours of notification or sooner. 1.3 Develops and implements nutrition care plans based on established standards of practice and includes the following information: 1) patient's energy/protein and fluid needs; percent of those needs being met on current diet; 2) pertinent lab values; 3) nutrition needs in relation to disease state; 4) medications that may cause food/drug interactions as appropriate; 5) patient's acceptance/tolerance of current mode of feeding; 5) suggested feeding modification, as needed. 1.4 Accurately documents nutritional services provided in patient's medical record. 1.5 Provides periodic evaluation and revision on the nutrition care plan based on the overall effectiveness of the patient's treatment through follow up visits and patient meal rounds. Provides nutrition education to the patient, family, or caregiver within 24-72 hours of referral. 2.1 Obtains food record/diet history from patient, family, or caregiver to establish patient's lifestyle, current eating habits, and food tolerances. 2.2 Tailors nutrition education and meal plan to the patient's needs, education level, diagnosis, and lifestyle. 2.3 When indicated, refers patient to outpatient dietitian for follow-up counseling after discharge. 2.4 Accurately documents provision of patient education, patient's level of understanding and expected compliance, and recommendations for follow-up when indicated. 2.5 Reviews and updates diet instruction material on a continuous basis. Makes recommendations to the Food Service Director for new reference books. Demonstrates knowledge of special needs and behaviors of specific age groups to include pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric. 3.1 Demonstrates knowledge of the changes associated with aging. 3.2 Demonstrates the ability to provide care based upon physical, psycho/social, cultural, safety and other age related factors. 3.3 Demonstrates the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient needs. Discusses patient nutrition care plan, needs, problems and progress with other members of the health care team. 4.1 Regularly attends and participates in multi-disciplinary team meetings regarding patient care. Serves as the nutritional care consultant and makes recommendations for optimal nutritional care. 4.2 Interacts with nursing and medical staff regarding patient's needs, progress and plans. 4.3 Consistently communicates with Patient Reps, Cooks, Tray Line Staff and Diet Office Supervisor on the status of patients and any special nutritional care. 4.4 When requested by the Food Service Director, participates on patient care teams or other committees. Provides nutrition training and supervision for dietetic students/interns. 5.1 Supervises dietetic interns and students during clinical nutrition rotations. 5.2 Participates in the performance evaluation of dietetic interns and students. 5.3 Communicates student progress with Food Service Director on a routine basis. Discusses student problems or concerns immediately as they occur. Maintains state licensure and Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics registration. Participates in continuing education seminars and lectures. 6.1 Participates in workshops, webinars, seminars and meetings to update nutrition knowledge. 6.2 Provides documentation of annual renewal of registration and licensure in timely manner. Performs other related duties as required. 7.1 Assists with other departmental duties as requested by Food Service Director (ie, Monthly In-services etc.). 7.2 Provides a monthly tally of patient consults/meal rounds/new admits visits. 7.3 Performs continuous quality improvement activities as assigned by the Nutritional Services Director. 8. Oversees Nutrition Services operations in production, cafeteria, and catering.

8.1 Directs and coordinates quality food and nutritional services through Nutrition Services Supervisor

8.2 Establishes measurable goals that integrate into the hospital strategic plan and the Nutrition Services departmental goals

8.3 Continuously develops, implements, updates, and educates co-workers regarding department policies and procedures that guide and support the progress of Nutrition Services and the Mercy values

8.4 Assesses and improves departmental performance through established quality control procedures and continuously seeks improvement opportunities for the quality of nutrition care.

8.5 Ensures that proper infection control measures are in place and that Nutrition Services co-workers facilitate safe and sanitary provision of food service to meet the nutritional needs of patients, guests, and co-workers

8.6 Ensures patient satisfaction scores meet identified goals

8.7 Embraces evidence-based practices to achieve quality patient care

8.8 Implements hospital projects effectively

9. Responsible for directly and indirectly supervising Nutrition Services Supervisor and co-workers

9.1 Reviews daily and monthly staffing levels to assure levels are within targeted guidelines to efficiently utilize allocated resources

9.2 Assesses through the hiring process basic qualifications, competencies of co-workers, and continuously assure that co-workers model the Mercy mission, vision, values, and Mercy Service Standards

9.3 Reviews qualifications and skills of department personnel who provide patient care and other integrated department services

9.4 Ensures all performance reviews are given in a timely manner

9.5 Assures that all co-workers are provided with in-service training, orientation, and continuing education opportunities

9.6 Ensures co-workers maintain certifications and competencies so HR/Education files are complete and accurate

9.7 Conducts regular staff meetings to discuss current nutrition issues, evaluation of Nutrition Services, and maintain open lines of effective communication

9.8 Creates and sustains an engaging work environment for co-workers to promote departmental improvements and low turnover

1. Develops and operates an annualized department budget

10.1 Directs department's annualized budget preparation

10.2 Controls, directs, and monitors budget performance within established guidelines and department and Mercy goals

10.3 Reviews and approves expenditures as appropriate

2. Continuously assesses and improves department performance levels through the quality control process

11.1Conducts surveys to promote co-worker, guest, and patient satisfaction

11.2Makes regular rounds in all areas of responsibility including patient floors

11.3Reviews menus, recipes, and clinical nourishments to assure quality, tasteful, and resourceful products are being provided to the hospital community. Recommends and makes changes as necessary

11.4Participates in development of patient menus, recipes, and evaluation of new products

11.5Approves the nutritional adequacy of selective menus and evaluates conformance to quality standards and diet prescriptions. Recommends menu changes when necessary

11.6Continuously reviews department equipment and facility needs. Recommends and makes changes as necessary

11.7Responsible for tracking and maintaining monthly and yearly meal statistics

11.8Provides meal statistics to appropriate personnel for reporting purposes

3. Responsible for providing optimum nutritional care to patients

12.1 Performs nutritional assessments on high-risk patients within 48 hours to determine nutritional status and level of care needed

12.2 Develops and implements nutrition care plans based on established standards of practice

12.3 Accurately documents nutritional services provided in patient's medical record

12.4 Periodically evaluates and revises the nutrition care plan based on the overall effectiveness of the patient's treatment

12.5 Provides nutrition education to the patient and/or family within 24 hours of referral

12.6 Demonstrates the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of patient needs

12.7 Confers with members of the health care team about patient needs, problems and progress

12.8 Responsible for participating in continuing education opportunities to update nutrition knowledge

12.9 Responsible for maintaining, ordering, and utilizing up-to-date and evidence-based nutrition education materials

4. Effectively communicates with all co-workers

1. Meets regularly with Administrator to keep him/her informed of progress-to-date, budget variances, quality and safety variances, and significant issues related to the workforce

2. Communicates with physicians to identify opportunities for improvement and follows-up accordingly

3. Serves as a member of hospital committees and serves as a liaison between nursing, medical personnel, and other allied health staff in relation to clinical nutrition and patient food services

4. Serves as a resource person to physicians, nursing, Nutrition Services co-workers, and all other co-workers regarding current food and nutrition practices, developments, and trends

5. Plans and coordinates training of dietetic interns and other students from local colleges and universities enrolled in supervised practicum

Minimum Required Qualifications

Education: Graduate of a 2 year AMA approved program in Radiologic Technology, AAS or BA degree. MRI safety Training for MRI technologist & Radiation safety training

Licensure: ARRT certification in Radiography and/or MRI registry eligible

Certification/Registration: Must obtain American Heart Association BLS within a reasonable time-frame (generally within 6 months), based on skills, knowledge and experience.

Other Skills and Knowledge: Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Experience: Two (2) years experience preferred.
