Natividad Medical Center (NMC) is seeking a permanent FT Hospital Senior Environmental Services Aide. The Hospital Senior Environmental Services Aide class is the advanced working level/lead worker class in the Hospital Environmental Services Aide (ESA) class series, responsible for performing housekeeping and custodial work, training new Environmental Services employees and acting in the absence of the Environmental Services Supervisor.

Examples of Duties SIGNIFICANT DUTIES
  • Leads team of Environmental Services Aides by planning, organizing, coordinating, and assigning daily activities; gives on the job training and instructions to subordinate staff; makes recommendations to the supervisor regarding promotion, reassignment, and recognition of outstanding performance and personnel needs.
  • Ensures that staff members are aware of and incompliance with established safety practices and procedures.
  • Reports to the supervisor periodically on team and individual work accomplishments, problems, progress in mastering tasks and work processes, and individual and team training needs.
  • Leads the team in assessing its strengths, weaknesses and operational gaps and provides leadership to the team in exploring alternatives and determining what improvements can be made (e.g. in work methods, processes and procedures.)
  • Resolves simple, informal complaints from employees and refers others, such as formal grievances and appeals, to the Supervisor, Director or appropriate management.
  • Intercedes with the supervisor or Director on behalf of the team to provide information on performance management issues and problems, and to recommend/request related actions, such as assignments, promotions, and performance appraisals.
  • Maintains a safe work environment. This includes, but is not limited to, use of equipment and supplies, observation of safety hazards, including contraband and patient activities when out of the norm, and notifying supervisor of findings while maintaining confidentiality and professional boundaries.
  • Sample, test, and evaluate new products, equipment, and practices for use or implementation in the Environmental Services Department.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Leads the team in special projects associated with Environmental Services activities; may requisition and issue housekeeping supplies, scrubs, strips, waxes, and polishes floors using either heavy (industrial-type) powered and/or lightweight floor scrubbers and buffers. Washes walls, windows, and blinds; dusts and polishes furniture; vacuums and shampoos carpets using wither industrial or lightweight vacuum.
  • Leads team in keeping facility in clean, orderly, and sanitary condition. Sweeps, scrubs, and waxes floors. Cleans, disinfects, and deodorizes lavatories, urinal, and toilet bowls, Cleans mirrors, sinks, etc. Dusts ledges and high touch surfaces.
  • Follows bio hazard safety and PPE guidelines, restocks all dispensers. Notes condition of and reports to supervisor or director any damaged or broken equipment or facility damage, leaks, clogged drains, and other conditions requiring maintenance.
Examples of Experience/Education/Training

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE PROVEN TRACK RECORD OF THE FOLLOWING:
Working knowledge of:

  • Methods, supplies and equipment used in sanitizing, cleaning and maintaining hospital buildings.
  • Typical biohazards in a hospital setting; safe working practices and techniques.
  • Basic practices and techniques in crew leadership including: setting and communicating team goals and objectives; assisting team members to organize work; coach, facilitate, problem solve, and recommend disciplinary measures as needed.
  • Hospital protocols and priorities regarding the clean-up of spills, blood, etc.
Skill and Ability to:
  • Plan, organize, evaluate, and coordinate daily activities of staff, and maintain quality control.
  • Follow written and oral instructions, and read and interpret written reports and directions.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees, the public, and work independently.
  • Observe safe work practices and procedures; identify, correct and/or report occupational hazards.
  • Determine housekeeping needs; schedule and organize work; train employees in housekeeping duties, equipment operation, safe and proper methods and application of chemicals.
Highly Desirable Qualification Have a basic understanding and use of computers to prepare and present basic reports.
REQUIRED CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

As a condition of employment, the incumbent will be required to:

  • Read and understand signs, labels and work schedules written in English.
  • Pass a pre-employment physical/medical assessment and background check
  • Possess a valid California Class C driver's license. Have and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
  • May be required to work overtime, irregular hours, variable shifts, evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Be willing to work in an environment with potential exposure to potentially hazardous and infectious substances/organisms such as bodily fluid or blood.

EXAMPLES OF EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION/TRAINING

An example of a way the requirements listed above might be acquired is:
One years experience in janitorial or light building maintenance or any combination of training, education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS

The physical and sensory abilities required for this classification include:

Mobility and ability to lift, push, pull and/or carry a minimum of 25 pounds such as laundry carts, floor buffing machines.
Mobility to climb and work aloft at heights of up to 20 feet; ability to reach areas for cleaning, repair and maintenance.
Manual dexterity and ability sufficient to reach, grasp and manipulate and operate standard cleaning equipment such as carpet shampooers, vacuum cleaners, etc.
Mobility to stand, stoop, kneel, reach and bend to perform strenuous physical labor such as moving beds and cleaning windows and walls.
Vision sufficient to see well enough identify color and to read instructions.
Hearing sufficient to function in a typical hospital environment.
Smell sufficient to detect potentially hazardous chemicals such as propane, chlorine, and hydrogen sulphide.
