Starting wage depends on education and experience. Above range reflects the full pay scale for this position; however, the incumbent would likely start in the developmental range. These wages pertain to applicants that would be new Federal Judiciary Law Enforcement appointments.

POSITION OVERVIEW & REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

The United States Probation Office for the Northern District of Iowa is currently recruiting for a Probation Clerk. This position will be located in the Sioux City, Iowa office of the U.S. Probation Office, Northern District of Iowa. The incumbent performs a variety of clerical support and technical assistance to the probation officers to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the office.

Representative Duties

- Formats, types, and edits reports developed by officers, often within a short time period. Reports include presentence reports, violation reports, and any other investigative reports etc., for the court. With direction from the officer or supervisory clerk, prepares petitions, orders, and papers essential to probation and parole supervision. Prepares other letters, memoranda, recurring reports and forms. Composes routine correspondence for officers.

- Sets up case folders, performs data entry, and maintains control logs.

- Receive, prioritize, and route all incoming materials from within the court to appropriate individuals in the office. Receive, screen, and route incoming and outgoing mail to appropriate persons or offices; and, process mail requiring special handling.

- Tracks and processes monthly supervision reports and maintains a file tracking system.

- Scanning, copying, filing, stamping, and locating files and documents.

- Assists in conducting criminal record checks through local or national law enforcement databases.

- Schedules appointments, arranges meetings, and maintains calendars for officers.

- Perform receptionist duties by greeting visitors, counsel, and clients in person or on the telephone, answering routine questions, responding to and processing overthe- counter inquiries, and directing visitors and callers to the appropriate person or department.

- Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicant must be a U.S Citizen or eligible to work in the United States. High School Diploma or GED is required. Candidates must also have two years of general experience, defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates the possession of, or the ability to acquire, the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position.

Educational Substitution: Education above the high school level may be substituted for required general experience on the basis of one academic year (30 semester or 45 quarter hours) equals one year of general experience.

Preferred Qualifications: The following are preferred not required. Completion of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a field of academic study, such as criminal justice, criminology, psychology, sociology, or human relations.

Job Requirements:

- Ability to type 40-45 words per minute

- Knowledge of standard office equipment/copying machines, office procedures, practices, and processes.

- A thorough knowledge of spelling, punctuation, and proper grammar usage

- Skill in using personal computers and use computer software

- Excellent time management skills, accuracy, ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and attentions to detail

- Ability to organize work in fast paced, high volume office
