The City of Fort Worth is seeking an energetic and skilled IT Communications Technician to perform radio installations, programming, maintenance and support of radio voice communications for the City of Fort Worth and other participating agencies; and assist in the day-to-day support of communications for the Fort Worth Regional Radio System. The position reports to the Wireless Operations Manager, and is required to participate in a 24/7, 365-day on-call rotation schedule, with 30 minute response times.

The Impact You Will Have:

The IT Communications Technician will be part of the Wireless Operations Division of IT Solutions. The department provides radio and install services for upwards of 20 city departments and 10 external agencies. Wireless Operations oversees a variety of projects that includes installing, maintaining, and repairing two-way radios, mobile data computers and other specialty equipment. The division also consults with customers on equipment needs; training customers in the use of communication systems and equipment; prepare reports and system operations and activities; analyze and recommend new communications and specialty equipment.

The successful candidate will:
  • Develop and build strong customer relations with city departments and external agencies.
  • Install, program, monitor, maintain, upgrade, and align communication and data equipment that will include handheld or mobile radios and accessories, mobile data computers, and global positioning systems.
  • Maintain accountability of LMR equipment, shop stock, parts and equipment needed for repairs and/or installations.
  • Diagnose and repair problems with radio communication system equipment, radio transceivers, and/or peripheral system and equipment.
  • Create LMR code plugs for various radio manufactures.
  • Perform as technical support on projects assigned to Wireless Operations.
  • Participate in a 24/7, 365-day on-call rotation schedule, with 30 minute response times.Preference may be given to applicants who possess the following:
    • P25 simulcast trunked radio experience
    • Active FCC GROL
    • Extensive Land Mobile Radio vehicle installation experience
    • Accountable public customer service experienceEducation and License Requirements:
      • Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Electronics or a related field plus two (2) years' experience in repairing electronic equipment or related experience.
      • Possession of an appropriate valid Texas Driver's License
      • Must be able to pass a CJIS background checkAdditional Information

        Shift Hours: 7:30 AM - 4 PM Monday - Friday Standard

        8:30 AM - 5 PM Monday - Friday while On-call

        This position is subject to overtime.
